It is a very safe city. You don’t have to worry about walking in the dark by yourself or getting robbed or assaulted. Of course, there is always a minimal chance as everywhere, but I think that is is very unlikely to happen in Mainz. The public transportation is also really good.

Walking at night in public spaces such as the Schillerplatz is quite safe! What you should look out for is 'Fastnacht' - around that time the city is crowded and full of drunk people. Otherwise safety is valued highly here and even though you might come into contact with some drug addicts (especially around the central station) they mostly don't cause any trouble!

Mainz is super safe. There are always people around, so you’re never alone! There are many contact points or police in case something should happen. The people are very open, friendly, and helpful!
Posted: January 2, 2025i feel very safe in Mainz. I have never experienced any kind of harassment or something similar. The only thing i experienced was catcalling from people that are sitting in their cars and driving by.
Posted: December 26, 2024There are incidents of catcalling and rape (check on Instagram @catcallsofmainz), but not frequent. POC are more exposed. Attacks on queer people are very seldom. The city is politically green/conservative/social democratic, very few right populist voters. With regards to crime and drug abuse, it's much safer than Frankfurt. It's also safer than Wiesbaden downtown.
Posted: August 2, 2024Pretty safe but there can be some unruly people at night, definitely advised to walk with a partner or group at that time. Otherwise very family oriented and full of quiet suburbs. Police are also easy to find

our neighborhood is safe, friendly and full of families, couples and students. its germany, so most of the public places are really safe. you dont have to worry about getting robbed or sth. most people here are educated friendly and public transportation is great and safe.
Posted: June 14, 2024A calm town, friendly people, welcoming to others. You can spend evenings at the river Rhein or stroll through the city. There is a University in Mainz, dedicated to the guy who invented the printing press, so many students live in Mainz.
Posted: June 12, 2024Mainz is a very safe city for solo travelling, being a rather small german city. In comparison if you would like to travel around for example to Frankfurt be aware to stay away from the "Bahnhofsviertel" during night time- the district near Frankfurt Main stations. In Mainz it would make sense to stay in the city centre, since depending in which outer parts of the city you would like zo stay in, it can become difficult to come home tonight without a Taxi. Please use a taxi driver instead of Uber! They might be a bit more expensive, but will bring you home safely.

Hi, I'm Sarah. I live in Germany and I can offer to sleep on my couch in the living room. I speak German and English and I am currently (re)learning French. I am very interested in French language exchange. I love travelling, particularly in / to India. I can be very sociable, but I also enjoy doing things on my own.
