Essen is rather safe. Especially the southern part of the city where I live. The north can be a bit rougher, starting at the city center and the main station. I know some things do happen, luckily they haven't happened to me living here my whole life. Therefore I feel quite safe and am not worried a lot of the time. The main threat is men..

It’s quite alright (especially in the area I live) but the area near the main station is not the best since there are a lot of weird drunk people, so it needs to be avoided at night. But I never had any issues

Pretty safe I would say! I’ve lived here my whole life and it really just depends on where you go like which part of the city. The Central Train Station may seem shady, but nothing has ever happened to me there, just stay away from weirdos and don’t even look at them(!) Also Altenessen isn’t to safe for women and in general😬I personally just don’t go there. The safest part of the city is definitely the South, Heisingen,Stadtwald,Werden,Rüttenscheid,Heidhausen,Rellinghausen. But like I said, nothing has ever happened to me, just stay away from weird men and it’s cool!!

I think it’s an individual feeling, but I would say that it depends in which quarter you are. I walk at night alone through Essen but I‘m not an anxious person basically. In some places I feel scared and I am more attentive.

I would say it depends on where you are and at what time - as anywhere, really. It's generally a safe place, and I'm not super worried about major things happening. Just the unfortunate usual catcalling and such.🥲
Posted: January 2, 2025I don't think it's very safe. I don't feel safe either. That's why I don't go out much at night. I hate feeling and being made to feel like this. I don't know when we will feel properly safe as women
