Dortmund is fairly safe, however in the city center and around the main train station you can find sketchy people and the number of homeless people and drug addicts is constantly rising. At night I prefer not walking but take rental scooters, my bike or public transport to get home.

When you are in the centre of Dortmund, you will be safer than in some dark, small streets. I would always take care of myself and my personal things, no matter where in Dortmund i am. If you are with some more people, the possibility for having bad experiences is smaller!
Posted: March 30, 2025There are some strange people, and one should definitely be a little careful. But I tend to come home in the middle of the night, and have still never felt seriously unsafe. I’d still recommend taking a friend with you if you wanna go out at night. :)
Posted: February 24, 2025It depends on the part of the city, but the city is nice for a few day trip and you can easily find friends/ go party here. Like in any bigger city the subways and busses have some weird people in them at like 3am but I never was assaulted etc, they don't do anything.

I have been here for four months but have not faced any harassment as of yet. However I have heard some stories but not from first hand accounts. I have also got some good reviews. So in that way, I feel it isn’t that bad.

I do not think that Dortmund is an especially dangerous city for women. I would say it’s like others, I’m always nervous walking home alone but not because of the city but because I’m a woman. So I’m not sure how to rate this, I would say you should be aware but not too worried.

It depends There are some places like the Nordstadt, Hörde or Dorstfeld, were you should be at least at night carefully. When I researcg about how many cases there have been of rape the previously years, this is what comes out; 2021:172, 2022:246, 2023:209
Posted: December 31, 2024Pretty safe in outer districts. Downtown I‘ve experienced some sexual harassment every few months. Overall Dortmund is pretty safe to travel to due to police presence but also due to harmonious coexistence

Nordstadt can be pretty annoying but the rest is pretty much fine I'd say. I heard people say they get catcalled a lot, for me it's normal, idk if it's overall special in comparison to other cities. Main offenders of sexual harassment are homeless people and old lonely men from my pov.
