Its a safe city! Police is aware and people are nice and open to help. Its a student city with lots of young people. If bad things happen, it's drunk teenagers, but no need to worry! Pro tip: Download the App "Heinerliner". It's sponsored by the city and has really cheap taxis (~3€ per ride and person).
Posted: December 23, 2024Since Darmstadt is a student town, you generally feel safe even in most areas at night. In Herrengarten (a large park in Darmstadt), there is a spot where homeless people and junkies gather. During the day, you can walk past there without any problems, but in the evenings, as a woman, I would (if possible) take a detour out of caution. However, in 2.5 years, I was only bothered once; that's a solid record. Otherwise, there's no need to worry here because there are always other people on the streets, so you never feel totally alone. All in all, in my experience, people are also helpful if you look a bit lost or confused in a corner.
Posted: June 30, 2024Stay away from places that aren't crowded, especially at night! Avoid dark paths and areas where alcohol is sold and consumed since there might be some drunk men who have lost their control. However, during the day Darmstadt is a beautiful city that's worth a visit!
