It’s a small city full of students known for it’s night life. It’s not a very dangerous place, everything is well connected by metro and buses that run late at night too. I haven’t experienced any harassment or catcalling or heard many stories too. There are some shady areas but nothing too extreme.

Rennes is a pretty lovely city but for a few years now, There are more and more problems due to drug issues. The city is less safety then, especially in certain places in the evening, as st Anne, le blosne
Posted: June 8, 2025It’s a very active and young city, I lived there for two years and even if you still need to be careful in the night sometimes it is quite chill and peaceful. Look out for protest though, it happens quite a lot and while most of it is okay, there are still some acts of violence sometimes.

It depends on the areas, some neighborhoods are kind of dangerous due to the shootings sometimes related to drug trafics, but like in any big city in France. I have only lived here for a couple of months but I never had any issues so I would say that I feel safe overall, especially in the subway at night.

I hear stories every so often of people being assaulted downtown (sexual assaults or thefts) and of drug related fights. I have never felt unsafe myself walking in the city center, but I mostly go out during the day. I’d say it’s better to be careful at night, especially in the metro and around Saint-Anne, but overall I think Rennes is a city where you feel rather safe (especially in comparison to other French cities like Nantes and Paris).

During the day I feel okay, safe because there are families, students and a lot of people in the streets and transports. But when it's dark, I'm scared, I try to not be alone in the bus and the metro after 22h.

Lived in Rennes for a year. Very safe area as a solo woman. Not as many expats in this area. I would recommend learning some French to make communication easier when needed. Close to tourist areas like Saint Malo or Mont Saint Michel (both 1 hour distance).
