Is Rennes safe for solo female travelers?

Rennes is generally safe for solo female travelers. Like any city, there are certain precautions you should take, but overall it has a low crime rate, respectful locals and easy navigation. How safe is Rennes?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Rennes is generally a safe city even at night, with well-lit main streets and relatively low crime rates. It is common to see pedestrians and cyclists at all hours. However, like in any urban area, it requires certain precautionary measures like avoiding deserted alleys and keeping personal belongings close. Some parts of the city, especially suburbs and surrounding areas, may feel less safe, so it's best to remain vigilant while walking alone at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Rennes is generally considered to be safe. It includes a well-maintained metro system and an efficient bus network that covers the city as well as surrounding suburbs. The vehicles are kept clean and the service is reliable. As with any public transportation, vigilance is always recommended, particularly during peak times and at night, as petty theft can occur. A small note of caution is that not all areas are served equally, so depending on your destination, you may have to rely on alternative transport.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Rennes overall tends to be quite safe and respectful towards women. While it's not uncommon to get the occasional odd comment or unwanted attention, especially in crowded or tourist-heavy areas, most locals are respectful and keep to themselves. Regular safety measures like avoiding walking alone late at night in secluded areas, and keeping personal belongings secure are typically sufficient.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Rennes, being a bustling university city, has relatively low instances of petty crimes. While occasional pickpocketing in crowded places or late-night petty theft may occur, it remains generally rare. As a traveler, maintaining vigilance and taking standard safety measures should mitigate most threats. Always keep an eye on your belongings and avoid walking alone at night in less crowded areas. Majority of visitors experience a trouble-free visit.
Tap water:

Tap water:Very safe

Tap water in Rennes is considered safe to drink. The city pays much attention to the quality of the water, and it undergoes rigorous quality controls to ensure that it is safe for consumption. Even in restaurants and cafes, you can frequently see locals requesting tap water, which is both free and fresh.

Solo travel experience

Lived in Rennes for a year. Very safe area as a solo woman. Not as many expats in this area. I would recommend learning some French to make communication easier when needed. Close to tourist areas like Saint Malo or Mont Saint Michel (both 1 hour distance).

On comparaison to other cities in France, I believe it’s fairly safe in Rennes. Beside from cat calling sometimes, I’ve never really felt unsafe here. I also noticed that when someone is getting harassed and other people notice it, it will rise some reaction in solidarity.
