although i’ve been wandering around all by myself, i’d rather be with someone else for my safety. i’ve already been whistled and stopped in the street by some guys who wanted to flirt, which i’m really not ok with, and i don’t want to be bothered. currently avignon is not super safe so the chances that something happens are still pretty low but please be safe and take care
Posted: March 28, 2025It depends on where you go in the city. There are certain neighborhoods that are less desirable than others, but I've never had any trouble since I've been living here, and the people are very nice. The city is pleasant, and the surrounding cities are too.

Avignon is not a really safe city, there's a lot of crime about drugs and weapons, and when it's night there's a lot of weird men outside so be aware when you're going out. Also there are 2 police stations who are close to the center city.
Posted: January 11, 2025I feel relatively safe, I've been followed only once in my 5 years living here (and it was after dark, around 2 am). Catcall happens kind of often, but I feel like it's the same in every city of France.
Posted: December 25, 2024Avignon is a rather calm city. Living in the city center, I don't really have to deal with the more sensitive neighborhoods, but like in all cities, there are places to avoid. For women, it's a matter of vigilance, it's mainly about knowing the areas where it's better not to go.

Avignon is a pretty city thanks to its ramparts and its papal palace. I recommend doing the palace as a combined ticket with the famous Avignon bridge to save money. On the other hand, I do not recommend the combined ticket including the papal gardens, the plants look dehydrated and there is not much to see. What surprised me is that in the center of Avignon everything is calm but as soon as you arrive in the south of the city towards the central station, many drugged and drunk men are present in the streets from the afternoon until the night, which made me feel very unsafe. In addition, my hotel was on the outskirts of the city and to get there I had to go through neighborhoods where there were police interventions against drug trafficking, not very reassuring. Instead of spending all of your days in Avignon, I recommend the city on the other side of the Rhône, which is Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. It's much quieter, there are fewer people, and it looks much more picturesque. There, you can visit many monuments that offer views of the city, Avignon, and the Rhône. I'm thinking in particular of Fort Saint-André and the Bel Tower. In addition, the abbey gardens and the Chartreuse are very pleasant to visit when the weather is nice.
