Is La Réunion Safe for Women? Crime Rate in La Réunion

Overall, Réunion remains an island known for its great cultural diversity. Everyone coexists and accepts each other as they are. It’s not uncommon to come across Tamil processions, hear the Islamic call to prayer, or hear church bells ringing. Here, all religions and skin colors are accepted. Unfortunately, in recent years, the situation has started to deteriorate, with an increase in crime and growing incivility. Some forms of racism exist (toward Comorians, Mahorais, and Zoreils—French expatriates in Réunion), but they remain minimal compared to other countries. Stores close relatively early (6–7 PM), and the sun sets early as well (7 PM in summer, 6 PM in winter), which empties the cities of their activity. As a result, there aren’t many people out in the evening (except in Saint-Pierre). However, I’ve never felt physically threatened. You might notice lingering stares, but no more than in mainland France. During the day, I’ve rarely encountered any issues. People are welcoming, and there’s a warmth that feels good and brings a sense of peace. Réunion is a pleasant place to live, and overall, it’s a safe destination—though, of course, precautions should always be taken (as no place is completely risk-free). That said, it’s worth noting that the situation has slightly worsened, with more incidents of incivility than before.

People here are nice. It is rare that I don't feel safe here. Obviously, as a woman, I always have this fear of being attacked or harassed. But fortunately, I am surrounded by caring people.

Réunion Island is safe for women. Just be careful when walking in the streets at night; don't overtrust people. Be cautious in clubs, parties, etc. Hide expensive things and hold your bag tightly. Some locals may sometimes seem upset with foreigners.

In Réunion Island you can walk by yourself on most place, and if you need to be accompagned, it will be for safari on somes of our beatiful forests or "cirque" (Mafate, Salazie, Cilaos). In general case, when you don't annoy someone, nodody will annoy you. We also belive on harmony above all religions, origines, genres, orientation ect...

Like all places it's best to avoid some streets in cities like Le port, chaudron, st louis, Pierrefonds. But even in those places it's relatively safe. I walk alone at night at different hours, i keep my pepper spray but never had to use it or had bad encounters so far. Heard some stories but I've never felt any real danger during the 5 years I've been here

Amazing place to stay! Wonderful people and nice trails to do and beautiful beaches to see. I've been traveling for 15 days and I travelled on the island discovering the cities and the beautiful places.

Family travel

La Réunion is a fantastic place for those who love hiking! The three cirques and the volcan create breathtaking scenery, the food is excellent and you can even enjoy some nice beaches to the west. The people are very open and friendly: there is no rush here.
