Is La Réunion Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

La Réunion is generally safe for solo female travelers. The island has a low crime rate and locals are friendly and willing to help. However, as is the case anywhere, it's important to maintain common sense and not to venture to remote areas alone, especially at night. Sexual harassment is not commonplace but does occasionally occur so it's beneficial to be aware of your surroundings. The island's main safety concern is related to the high number of car accidents, but this should not be a significant issue for those not driving. Natural disasters such as cyclones or volcanic eruptions may occur, yet are well managed by local authorities and appropriate warnings are issued.

Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

La Réunion is relatively safe even at night. Most areas have a calm and serene atmosphere, although, like anywhere, one should exercise basic vigilance. It is usually safe for women to walk alone at night, especially in well-lit and populated areas. Petty crime like bag snatching can occur so it's advisable to be aware of one's surroundings. Overall, the island is tranquil and the instances of crime are rare.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in La Réunion, including buses, taxis, and local shuttles, is generally safe and well-regulated. As a female solo traveler, usual precautions such as staying alert of your surroundings, not flashing expensive belongings, and avoiding travel at night in unpopulated areas should still be kept in mind. While rare, pickpocketing incidents can occur so it’s important to keep a close watch on personal belongings. The networks are well-defined and frequent, especially in urban areas, making it a reliable and convenient option to get around.

Street harassment:Moderate

La Réunion, while being a quite charming and fascinating part of France, can present a mixed experience regarding street harassment. There have been a few instances of catcalling and unwanted attention in certain areas, particularly in the evenings. However, it certainly doesn't outweigh the general friendly and welcoming atmosphere presented by its locals. As with any travel destination, I would recommend exercising the same caution you would in your home country.

Petty crimes:Low

La Réunion is generally a safe destination with a relatively low rate of petty crime. Nevertheless, it's always important to stay vigilant, especially in crowded areas or at night. Pickpocketings, luggage theft, and other non-violent petty crimes may occasionally occur. To minimize the risk, avoid displaying expensive items, keep your personal belongings safe, and always watch your surroundings.

Tap water:Safe

In La Réunion, the overall quality of tap water is pretty good. In major cities and towns, tap water is treated and typically safe to drink. However, in some rural areas, it might not be safe and bottled water will be a better choice. So, it's advisable to stay updated with local advice.

Family travel experience

La Réunion is a fantastic place for those who love hiking! The three cirques and the volcan create breathtaking scenery, the food is excellent and you can even enjoy some nice beaches to the west. The people are very open and friendly: there is no rush here.
