Is Turkey safe for solo female travelers?

Traveling solo as a woman in Turkey is generally safe. Large cities like Istanbul and Ankara, as well as tourist hubs such as Antalya and Cappadocia, are typically welcoming to foreign visitors. However, like many places, it demands a certain level of consciousness and alertness, especially at night. Always be aware of your surroundings, maintain personal boundaries, and avoid secluded areas. It can be helpful to learn a few key phrases in Turkish, but most people in Turkey's tourist areas speak English.

Lots of things to do and see. They have nice resorts, I personally preferred staying in a city, Istanbul. Great public transport. It's really fun bargaining there and so many cats. Maybe be a little careful about the food, generally safe though and try all the teas!

I was in Turkey with my mom and cousin for a week. We did different day trips going to side or going out with a boat. It was a very great time but very hot. Sadly we only spent a week there, I could’ve easily stayed 2 weeks. Overall a a great time.

Beyoglu, Solo travel

Honestly a very touristic place that locals doesn’t hang out that much. It’s is more expensive than usual since it’s a touristic area. A lot of nice restaurants, art shops, galleries and museums. It’s not one of those dangerous /avoid going places but (in case you’re clubbing and such) be careful if you’re out after midnight till morning. Avoid going/passing by tarlabaşı.

Beyoglu

Beyoğlu is a very old and popular district of Istanbul. There are various museums, galleries, restaurants, clubs, cafes and shops. You can walk around and enjoy the architecture and history. Since it is an attraction for centuries, there are also some problematic neighbourhoods in which crime rate is moderate. So I recommend the travellers avoid entering unknown places.

Istanbul

As a local, I believe Istanbul is great for solo women if you stay in the right areas. For the safest and most vibrant experience, I highly recommend staying in or visiting Kadiköy, Beşiktaş, or Nişantaşı. These are student-friendly, modern, and very safe areas where you can walk comfortably at almost any hour. Quick Tips: Always use apps like BiTaksi or Uber for transportation to ensure a safe and fair trip. Stick to central, crowded streets and use the Metro/Ferry lines.

Halıcıoğlu Mahallesi

It's actually a pretty safe neighborhood. The most of the people around here are family. There is a park near the seaside and since there are boats and little yachts, the security is there all the time, and you can walk around comfortably.

Ankara

it's usually safe in kizilay, tunali, bahcelievler, sogutozu, and universiteler mahallesi. but be careful in kecioren, maltepe, and asti. sometimes they're trying to pickpocket or steal your stuff, please use taxi only using apps.

Ankara

If your phenotype or outfit stands out from the natives, there’s a higher chance you’ll get talked to and of course, scammed or flirted with uncomfortably. I’d recommend going anywhere that is not modern/downtown (so safe areas would be Gaziosmanpasa, Ayranci, Kizilay, Koru, Cayyolu and such other neighborhoods with relatively higher socioeconomic class) with a native friend. Nighttime is risky for all women in the Middle East. Do NOT trust taxi drivers, especially if it’s night and you’re travelling alone and don’t know the language. I haven’t had a single problem with them in my last 7...

About me

Hello everyone! I’m Fatma. I have been working as a teacher in İstanbul for six years. I love travelling and solo-travel has become kind of a therapy for me over the years:) If you are in İstanbul, I can show you around at weekends and give you some tips as well. You can ask any questions, please don’t be shy. My home is a bit far from the touristic places, but if you need a place to crash you can come over:)
