It varies completely according to the district. It is safe outside of certain neighborhoods, contrary to what is thought. Beyoğlu is the best known example. Although Taksim Istiklal Street is generally safe, a few side streets, which can be a problem at a certain time, are very dangerous and the side street in the other direction is quite safe.

Pretty safe, if you know which districts to avoid (some are really dangerous). Most tourist areas are generally safe, but you can get your things stolen. I’ve lived here for a year and nothing ever happened to me
Posted: September 16, 2025If you avoid certain neighborhoods late at night and stay in busy areas, you shouldn’t have any problems in Istanbul. Just keep an eye on your bag and other belongings to prevent theft. Public transportation is generally safe, especially the metro. I’d recommend not taking minibuses or other shared vans.
Posted: September 15, 2025It depends on the district and the impression you create. Unfortunately, perpetrators see tourist women as easier targets. I don’t recommend walking alone after 11 pm (in popular and central areas) and 9-10 pm in quieter low income residential areas especially in suburbs.

İstanbul is a warm and welcoming city but you need to be careful nonetheless. There are a lot of people trying to scam tourists and take advantage of trusting women. My advice is try to stay in known and populated areas and don't believe the first person who offers/says/invites you, be cautious.

Istanbul was magical. I had a blast there! It was my first time traveling abroad and I did it alone, no regrets🥰 Met amazing people and i felt safe there the whole time I didn’t do many activity since the trip was poorely planned yet i had so much fun. The public transportation is greaatt, didn’t have to use a taxi once. I mostly used buses, public ferries and metros/tram
