How safe is Istanbul?

Sera

Hello Ladies, In recent years, cases of femicide and rape have unfortunately increased in Turkey. Please avoid walking alone in dark and isolated places at night. As someone living in Istanbul, I can tell you that not every neighborhood is equally safe. Please be cautious for your own safety. Also, be sure to check taxi fares and don’t accept them without knowing the price in advance.

İstanbul is a very crowded city with a population of 18 million. You can see people outside in many popular places day and night, which makes you feel safer. Don't hastitate to ask if the place you are staying iş safe safe or night. If you want to find someone to speak in English try to choose young people :)

It depends on the place and time. There are some places where you should not be alone at night. Also, be cautious with the drivers; some of them are very bad. If you need help, ask teenagers or young adults—most of them know English and are helpful. Be careful around middle-aged individuals.

I live in a safe neighborhood in Istanbul, close to the second bridge. The neighborhood I live in is called Emirgan. Obviously not all neighborhoods are the same and do not have the same level of safety. Istanbul is a metropolis and you should be aware that there are various types of people from all over the world. You can see many kind people around, but you can also see many rude people. My advice would be to enjoy the kindness and hospitality of the Turks and know how cunning they are. Do not allow them to abuse your kindness. When appropriate, draw boundaries by stopping the conversation and walking away. Enjoy your trip to Istanbul with its beautiful culture and history. Btw, there are many other places than Taksim. Go to Bebek, Arnavutköy, Yeniköy, Anadolu Hisarı, Çengelköy, Çamlıca, Kuzguncuk, Kadıköy and Kanlıca. (plus Anadolu Kavağı)

Reliable hotels and airbnbs can be preferred. We have to stay away from men we don't know as women. Accommodations with comments should be preferred. More central locations can be preferred. Staying as a guest at the home of others may not be reliable. You should prefer the options you will stay alone.

It is not safe enough for women. We are always on guard. Murders and rapes are not punished. But this usually happens to Turkish people. Tourists are safer in this regard. The law protect on tourists.

Actually, Istanbul is generally a safe place, but I wouldn’t recommend including the districts of Esenyurt and Zeytinburnu in the places you visit. There are a lot of immigrants there, and they are not very trustworthy. Shopkeepers and all people try to be helpful, but please be careful

Istanbul is generally safe city. You might get robbed if you not cover your things in crowd places. But this is a slight chance. I never been. Do not walk alone in the dark on side streets late at night. The chances of something happening aren't very high, but they aren't low either.

Please don't go to the streets others warned you about because even locals don't pass those places. Public places are usually safe. Especially if it's crowded. Don't be hesitant to call for help there are more people to help you

Is Istanbul worth visiting?

Travel rating

4.5 /5

based on 105 experiences from female travelers

Couple travel

Being an experienced traveler, I avoided Istanbul for a long time because of the image of being too "touristy." I regret that decision a million times because after being it myself, I fell in love. I am obsessed with how it looks, with the people, and the overall atmosphere. It's a highly international place, where you can always find someone to go out with. I came to Istanbul 3 times in total - in May, in June, and in January. I can say for sure that it is not a nice winter destination - or maybe I was unlucky with the weather - but in May in June it is heavenly nice :) My favorite experiences were: - Turkish breakfast at some terrace with seaview (around 15 euro pp) - famous San Sebastian cheesecake near Galata Tower - Turkish bath (25 euro pp) Some experience that I wouldn't do again - dinner Bosphorus cruise. Overpriced, bad food and diluted drinks, interior and show with 90's vibe (not in a good way)
