I’d say that Dortmund is about as safe - or unsafe - as any other major Germany city. Crime is fueled by homelessness and drug problems. The northern part of the city (Nordstadt) should be avoided at night, at least if you’re alone. The main train station (Dortmund Hauptbahnhof) is a gathering place for homeless people and drug users and should be avoided at night if possible, as conflicts often arise there. You’ll also find a lot of homelessness and drug use in the pedestrian zone inside the...
Posted: August 12, 2026Dortmund has its few odd people that will yell at you for no reason (steer clear of central station) but it can be lovely too!! I‘ve felt safe walking around at night actually, you just gotta be about your wits like anywhere else too

In general, Dortmund is quite safe, especially during the day. However, I would be more careful and cautious when walking in Nordstadt. It’s best to choose places like Phoenixsee or the city center for a walk.

Dortmund it’s really safe, very quiet and peaceful, it can be a little be dangerous in the central station at night, a lot of homeless, also can be a little bit dangerous when there’s a BVB Game because there’s a lot of drunk people (that’s what I see in the news), but I don’t have any safety problems here, I think it’s only that I would say
Posted: April 3, 2026Dortmund is basically safe. However, I would avoid deserted streets after dark. I would also avoid large groups of men. If you're not obviously carrying expensive items, there's little risk of being robbed. Public transportation is very safe.
Posted: July 5, 2025Not safe overall, especially in the city. Thats where I live. There are many drunks and agressive football fans around everywhere, its a catastrophe. People arent friendly either and our neighbours were drug dealers, its a pain.

I am originally from Argentina and relocated to Germany a decade ago. During my time there, I had the opportunity to live with a family and care for their two children, which I found to be an excellent way to immerse myself in the culture and learn the German language 😊 Following this, I volunteered at a monastery in Southern Germany and also taught Spanish at a local school. This period proved to be so fulfilling that I chose to remain in Germany and pursue studies in hotel management. My travels have broadened my perspective significantly, leading me to appreciate diverse cultures and understand that there are many valid approaches to life and various viewpoints. I believe this exposure has fostered in me a greater sense of tolerance, understanding, kindness, and patience. I particularly enjoy exploring cities and observing the daily lives of their inhabitants. I have a strong interest in history and ancient civilizations, as well as mythology and philosophy. I am utilizing this platform with the hope of connecting with local residents, learning from their experiences, and engaging in local activities, perhaps over a meal or a coffee.
