Is Germany Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Germany is generally a very safe destination for solo female travelers. The crime rate is low and local citizens are typically courteous and helpful. Public transportation, including trains and busses, is widely available and secure. Nevertheless, previously would be wise to respect general safety guidelines as in any other place, such as avoiding isolated areas late at night and being aware of your belongings. German people usually speak English, which makes communication easier. Remember, always trust your instincts.

How safe is Germany?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Germany, in general, has a high level of safety even at night. However, like any other urban areas in the world, some parts can be less secure than others. It's always prudent to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid less populated areas, and stick to well-lit lanes. German law enforcement is reliable and emergency services are responsive. Public transportation networks function well into the night and they are normally secure. If you're feeling uneasy, taxis are readily accessible and dependable.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Very safe

Public transportation in Germany is one of the safest, most efficient, and reliable in the world. Stations and vehicles are generally well-lit and security personnel are frequently present. Whether it's bus, tram, U-Bahn or S-Bahn, it is well-maintained and punctual. Especially in bigger cities like Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg, you can safely travel even at night. It is also common for women to travel alone. However, like anywhere, always maintain general safety awareness.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Germany is generally a safe country for solo female travelers. The incidence of street harassment isn't commonplace, but it's always a good idea to stay alert just like you would in any other country. Most people uphold respect and personal space. Especially in urban areas, you can expect the majority of people to keep to themselves. However, be sure to familiarize yourself with the local customs and observe the behaviors and actions of the locals so you can navigate through the streets safely.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Germany is generally a safe country with a strong law enforcement presence. Petty crimes like pickpocketing or purse snatching are relatively low compared to other European countries. However, like any major city around the world, they can occur in crowded areas, tourist hotspots, or public transportation. So, while the risk isn't high, it's important to always stay vigilant and keep a close watch on your belongings.

Trier, Group travel

Trier is honestly really beautiful. I enjoyed my time there even though it was fairly hot. My friends and I planned a small trip around the city and my favourite part was Porta Nigra. I hade some guys in my Friend Group so I felt rather safe, so I didn't pay too much attention to my surroundings and I can't make a detailled/accurate estimate

Berlin, Group travel

I spent a full day in Berlin during my Interrail Trip in Febuary 2023. I absolutely loved loved loved the Berlin Wall, so please visit it when you get the chance. We saw all major sightseeing landmarks in just one day, most notably the Brandenburger Tor, the Judendenkmal, the Weltzeituhr and many more.

Deggendorf, Couple travel

I've been there a few times because my boyfriend lives there, and it's actually pretty quiet, especially in the mornings, and on weekends, there are often a few stalls to visit. It's also one of the most welcoming places for international students. 😁

Cologne, Solo travel

For me it was a little difficult, sometimes I felt alone and had no one to go out with, there aren't that many things to do and they don't have festivals or as much street music as I expected there would be, the people are friendly but they don't make much of an effort to include you, unfortunately the first day I arrived I had a very persistent experience in terms of xenophobia but nothing went wrong.

Germany, Solo travel

I visited Dortmund and Berlin and enjoyed both. Dortmund had a more relaxed laid back feel to it, while Berlin was a bit more exciting. Due to some mishaps in my schedule I arrived in both cities in the evening and the walk from the airport/train station to my hotels was a lil scary since there was barely anyone on the streets with the lights dim. At the end of the day, I was still very safe and didn’t have any uncomfortable encounters. The food wasn’t quite as good for me as everything I’ve tried during my other trips, I’d say their potatoes were quite good tho! The locals are very friendly and genuinely helpful!! Amazing culture, which made me feel very comfortable.

Berlin, Solo travel

I felt mostly safe, my biggest enemy was ice which was everywhereee and I almost slipped a few times (I wore Dr. Martens which are the only winter shoes I have). Main focus of my yourney was kpop concert(Ateez) so I went to kpop and pop up shops, Asia store (for some korean snacks) visited Eastern Wall, spent some time on Alexander Platz, went to a Planetarium, saw Alexander Turm(not on the inside too expensive you can skip that), ate rolls at Cinnamood, tried Burger at Burgermeister, went to some asian restaurant (Mizumi), tried the allegedly best Boba Tea in Berlin at Cokebuy (personally was not the best), ate the best dumplings at Dumplingworld (I think) and went to a kpop party. All in all amazing experience. Traffic is amazing, you can easily arrive anywhere you need as long as you have google maps and understand even a bit of language although almost everyone speaks English in Berlin.

Frankfurt, Family travel

It was really fun. Though of course was visiting family there so they knew where to take me/what to show me. I was a kid at the time, and didn’t have to pay for anytning food wise thankfully. I remember being given 100 euro for a souvenir, and my cousins took me to a mall for shopping. Just a plain white hoodie with three bananas on it was 88 euros 😅 It’s been years since then, but that’s the thing I remember the most aside from the sky and strawberry picking I did with them.

Germany, Family travel

So I stayed in Germany with my family at one of my dads friends in Lowenstein. I think i stayed there for a week, and I enjoyed it A LOT. The peace and quiet of that town is unmeasurable. I loved the architecture and the nature around it. My days were pretty inexpensive as I spent them walking around. I remember a lake being pretty close to the town and you can swim there

Berlin, Solo travel

I felt so safe in Berlin, even when I walked alone at night as a 16 year old in Mitte! If you like museums, this is the place, they were all very interesting and my favorite was the Deutsche Kinemathek, a good spot for photos too ;) A skip for me would be going up the Fernsehturm, it wasn’t really amusing haha A block away from Mauerpark (fav park ever) it’s a street; Kastanienallee with many restaurants and I loved every single one of them in my stay! My main travel recommendations would be; Alwaaaaays bring cash!!! The Germans value their cash and it’s never guaranteed that your card will be accepted. About the language, young people were my safe space to speak in English, I’d say to please try more with the elderly and speak their language. About public transport, coming from a place where it’s not exactly reliable I loved it in Berlin though some of the schedules were a little weird and the interstate trains…yeah, have 0 expectations because they can cancel last minute, stop completely mid journey or cancel everything for the day. If you’re in a budget you can hop in the bus line 100 or 200 and see the main spots, always validate your ticket before or it’s a big fine! I wouldn’t go into the U-bahn 8 alone at night, it’s doable using it for central locations, though going to the outskirts or 30+ away from the center got me to places where I didn’t feel safe or comfortable My favorite transport was the Straßenbahn and the S-bahn :)

Bergisch Gladbach

Bergisch Gladbach is a little city near Cologne. I think it is very safe to walk around alone. The people are mostly friendly and helpful if you need help. I wouldn't be worried about meeting people who would really harm you. Sometimes there are people who ask for money but if you just say no or ignore them they will leave you alone.

Olching

It’s a small town near Munich, in which there is none to minimal crime going on. I am connected to the local police department and have insights about how many crimes are happening, and there is basically none

About Me

Hiii!! I am Tara, an 18 year old highschool student near Frankfurt, who loves meeting new people! =D I love connecting and making new friends, which is why I downloaded this app. I also love travelling, sure, but since I'm still going to school, I can't do that much. And I have to find budget friendly options.... If you have any recommendations tho, contact me! I also have quite a few interests and hobbies, such as reading Manga etc., sketching and doing Ashtanga Yoga. I like atending different workshops too! If you are currently nearby and somewhere my age, maybe we could meet up and I can show you around! =DD Or maybe you just want some advice on where to go to in Frankfurt and the nearby places. I am also open to chatting online =). Anyways, it would be nice to meet you! =)

About Me

Hello there !^^ My name is Anh Van (u can call me Anna :)), two years ago I left everything(flat, job, friends etc) behind, filled up a backpack and went out there to explore our wonderful earth~ I’m a free, creative and cheerful spirit who’s a bit all over the place(figuratively and literally haha) and overall truly spontaneous(a kinder way to say that I have absolutely zero organization haha) Oh and above all, I’m all about enjoying simple things like Music, Art and Nature!(I love smelling flowers, eating tomatoes and petting animals😋) Admiring a sunset, enjoying some good time with friends and marvel at the beauty of a starry night are the things I live for! The world has so much to offer so I just want to let myself be carried where the wind(and my wallet can)take me, living day by day.✨ And of course I’m open to meet anyone regardless of your age, ethnicity or whatever you identify as etc, cause Friendship knows no boundaries right?^^ so feel free to contact me whenever ;) Peace and love<3
