Is Düsseldorf Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Düsseldorf is generally safe for solo female travelers. Like any other city, it is important to watch out for your belongings and stay vigilant especially during the night or when visiting less crowded areas. While crime rates are relatively low, minor thefts can occur especially in tourist-heavy locations. Public transport is safe and reliable but again, it's good to be aware of your surroundings. It is also advised to avoid walking alone late at night in less vibrant districts. Overall, Düsseldorf is a safe and welcoming city for solo female travelers when the appropriate precautions are taken.

How safe is Düsseldorf?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Düsseldorf is generally considered safe, even for solo female travelers. The city is well-lit at night, and is monitored by police and private security. Nevertheless, like any big city, certain areas may be less safe than others, especially after dark. It's always a good idea to remain alert, avoid deserted areas, and stick to well-traveled routes. Public transport is reliable, although it's recommended to stay on guard against pickpockets, particularly in crowded areas. Please carry a charged mobile phone for emergencies and let someone know your movements. As always, trust your instinct. If a situation or location feels unsafe, leave immediately.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Düsseldorf is generally safe for solo female travelers. The city has an efficient system of trams, buses, and suburban trains that are well-maintained and reliable. They're often monitored by security and policing isn't uncommon, providing passengers added reassurance. However, it's always recommended to stay alert, especially while traveling alone during late hours. As with any city, be aware of your surroundings, avoid deserted paths and don't leave your belongings unattended.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Düsseldorf, the level of street harassment is relatively low compared to many other large cities around the world. German people, in general, tend to respect individual space and privacy. However, like in any urban environment, it's always essential to stay alert and remain aware of your surroundings at all times. It's also recommended to avoid certain less traveled areas or parks during the night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Düsseldorf is generally considered a safe city with a low crime rate. However, like any other major city, it is not entirely free of petty crime. Instances of pickpocketing, bag snatching or phone theft may occasionally occur, particularly in crowded areas or public transport. It is advised to keep an eye on your belongings and avoid displaying expensive items openly. Nighttime is relatively secure but still requires routine caution. Regardless, the city's robust security and surveillance systems work effectively to maintain public safety.

Solo travel

I felt safe but I was also there for 24hrs. There was a lot of places to walk to but I felt limited with choice of things to see. I would definetly recommend the Old Town in the evening for a drink and food.

Düsseldorf is literally the prettiest city in Germany I’ve visited so far!’ The buildings are huge and pretty, you’ve got a mix of old architecture that reminds me of Paris and you’ve got modern buildings too! The park is super pretty, it’s very safe, the promenade around Rhein is just stunning! It’s super lively and they’ve got lots of cafes and bars next to the Rhein blasting music and people are just having fun ✨

Düsseldorf is a big beautiful city and has unlike few different parts. The area around central train station is not that peaceful and it is a bit chaos but when you get out of that zone it feels very safe, aristocrat and worth visiting

Meet locals in Düsseldorf

About Me

I live in Düsseldorf, Western Germany, currently in my mom's spare room because I'm hoping to be traveling around for the next year. I love meeting new people, it's my favourite part about going to new places or back to places I've been before. I enjoy hiking and backpacking but prefer not doing it alone :) I'm a terrible cook but I can do Indian dal and some Chinese food and I bake decent breads. I do martial arts and work as a photographer and on film.

About Me

hello! my name is Julia and I love to travel and meeting new people! I have never tried anything like couch surfing before but I am excited to give it a try :) I am an outgoing person who likes to go to art exhibitions and cultural events. I studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf and I am looking forward to an internship at the theatre in Düsseldorf end of February. In the meantime I would like to visit Milan because I really like the city and haven’t been there for a while. While I’m there I would also like to visit my relatives who live in Ivrea and I would also like to go to Bologna for a day by train because I am considering to apply there for my Masters in “Innovation of Culture and the Arts”. 🌆💌 I am an easy-going and communicative person, who is respectful and tidy. I would be very happy if someone could host me for a couple of days!
