Is Berlin Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Berlin is generally safe for solo female travelers. Violent crime is rare, locals are usually welcoming, and physical harassment is low. Regardless, it's important to remain vigilant, especially after dark. There is a good police presence and public transportation is usually safe at all times. However, some neighborhoods are considered less safe than others. Like in any other city, use common sense and take standard precautions like staying in well-lit areas, not disclosing you're traveling alone to strangers, and being wary if you consume alcohol.

How safe is Berlin?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Berlin generally has a high safety level. However, like in any major city, certain precautions should be taken, especially at night. Central areas and neighborhoods are typically well policed and lit. Public transportation runs around the clock and taxis are readily available. Nevertheless, sticking to well-traveled areas is advisable. Some areas might be less frequented late at night and it's always important to stay aware of the surroundings. Walking alone is generally safe but caution should always be exercised.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Berlin is widely used by locals and tourists due to its efficiency and comprehensive network. You can conveniently travel all across the city without feeling unsafe, even into the early hours of the morning. However, like any other large city, pickpocketing can be an issue so stay vigilant about your belongings and be cautious of your surroundings. Overall, Berlin's public transport can be considered safe for solo female travelers.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Berlin, being a modern and liberal city, has relatively few issues of street harassment. Although incidences can occur, as they can anywhere, most of the areas that tourists frequent are safe and well patrolled. You may occasionally encounter some rude comments or unsolicited attention especially during the night. Still, residents are generally welcoming and respectful towards women. You can feel confident about navigating the city independently. Nonetheless, we advise using common sense and being aware of your surroundings in less crowded areas or later at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Berlin, as a global city, generally maintains a low rate of petty crimes. Although instances of theft and pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded areas and public transportation, they are not rampant. The locals are typically respectful and helpful to tourists. However, staying alert and aware of your surroundings is always recommended for any traveler.

I went there for a concert and overall the city was quiet nice and I definitely felt really safe, especially through the day, but even in the later hours I still felt safe while going back to my hotel

Family travel

*Quite safe *Recommend traveling on weekends, many cute art and antiques markets! *I lived near Zoo station, the alley was stinky… *The Supermarket under the bridge is cheap, but my mother encountered a wanderer (he was eating the food on the cabinet without paying, not attacking but a little bit scary) *There’s a small Strawberry shop outside the Bahnhof Südkreuz, very fresh and cheap! *Also recommend the parks near Südkreuz, less people and great view

It was fun I can’t lie. Berlin is safe and there’s a lot to do at all times and the people in Berlin are unbelievably fun. Some might seem rude but that’s just because you haven’t been to germany before haha. German culture is not for the week.

I spent a full day in Berlin during my Interrail Trip in Febuary 2023. I absolutely loved loved loved the Berlin Wall, so please visit it when you get the chance. We saw all major sightseeing landmarks in just one day, most notably the Brandenburger Tor, the Judendenkmal, the Weltzeituhr and many more.

I felt mostly safe, my biggest enemy was ice which was everywhereee and I almost slipped a few times (I wore Dr. Martens which are the only winter shoes I have). Main focus of my yourney was kpop concert(Ateez) so I went to kpop and pop up shops, Asia store (for some korean snacks) visited Eastern Wall, spent some time on Alexander Platz, went to a Planetarium, saw Alexander Turm(not on the inside too expensive you can skip that), ate rolls at Cinnamood, tried Burger at Burgermeister, went to some asian restaurant (Mizumi), tried the allegedly best Boba Tea in Berlin at Cokebuy (personally was not the best), ate the best dumplings at Dumplingworld (I think) and went to a kpop party. All in all amazing experience. Traffic is amazing, you can easily arrive anywhere you need as long as you have google maps and understand even a bit of language although almost everyone speaks English in Berlin.

I felt so safe in Berlin, even when I walked alone at night as a 16 year old in Mitte! If you like museums, this is the place, they were all very interesting and my favorite was the Deutsche Kinemathek, a good spot for photos too ;) A skip for me would be going up the Fernsehturm, it wasn’t really amusing haha A block away from Mauerpark (fav park ever) it’s a street; Kastanienallee with many restaurants and I loved every single one of them in my stay! My main travel recommendations would be; Alwaaaaays bring cash!!! The Germans value their cash and it’s never guaranteed that your card will be accepted. About the language, young people were my safe space to speak in English, I’d say to please try more with the elderly and speak their language. About public transport, coming from a place where it’s not exactly reliable I loved it in Berlin though some of the schedules were a little weird and the interstate trains…yeah, have 0 expectations because they can cancel last minute, stop completely mid journey or cancel everything for the day. If you’re in a budget you can hop in the bus line 100 or 200 and see the main spots, always validate your ticket before or it’s a big fine! I wouldn’t go into the U-bahn 8 alone at night, it’s doable using it for central locations, though going to the outskirts or 30+ away from the center got me to places where I didn’t feel safe or comfortable My favorite transport was the Straßenbahn and the S-bahn :)

I love Berlin and all its vibe, we were a group of 3 girls and we had no problems at any time regarding insecurity Maybe at night I wouldn't go back alone, we went to KitKat and the atmosphere was great and totally liberal and safe. I will repeat the trip to Berlin in the summer because I fell in love with this city.

My friend and I did a 5 day trip to Berlin to see Sabrina Carpenter and here’s how our experience of the city was! What we did: Activities: Berlin Zoo, Dungeon Sights: Bradenburg Gate, Reichstag Building, Holocaust Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin Dom, Museum Island, Berlin Wall, East Side Gallery, RAW-Gelände ⭐️ Recommendations: + We really liked all the places I just listed! + Museum Island was so pretty, I could have soent all day just walking around the area and all the gorgeous buildings! A picnic in sunset would be beautiful there + The Zoo was super nice, especially to my friend who had never bene to one! - RAW-Gelände seemed cooler on TikTok, but might be that we just visited at a bad time! 🛏️ Accommodation: We stayed at the a&o Hostel Mitte, which was rather good for the price we paid! The location was quite nice, between city centre and East Side Gallery, just a 10min walk away from Ostbahnhof station. The hostel was huge and had a lot of school kids so was a bit noisy at times and not perhaps on the cleanest side - but not gonna complain for the 13€/night we paid! 🚗 Getting around: During the 5 days that we stayed, there was a public transport strike for 2 days so we had to take Ubers more than we would have wanted to! The oublic transportation seemed really good otherwise, and getting tickets from the BVG app was easy. We took the day ticket (24 Stunden) twice, and it was 12,30€ so jot too bad at all! Ubers were roughly 10-12€ for the short rides we took. Also used the scooters at some point, big recommendation for them too! 💸 Budget: In total I spent around 300€ so roughly 60€/day, including accommodation, transportation, food, sights and shopping. Accommodation: 13€/night in a hostel Public transport: roughly 2-20€ day Food: 15-35€/day Activities: 40€ total (excluding the concert lol) 🚨Safety: We both felt quite safe even walking at night. Our hostel was located near KitKat and Tresot which was supposed to be sketchier area (at least according to the hostel reviews lol) but we didn’t feel unsafe. Overall tips: • Carry some cash with you as some stores and restaurants might mot accept card payments! • If you are planning on going to museums or doing activities etc, book in advance! You might save money, and some places are booked out fast! We for example weren’t able to go in the Reichstag Building without booking days in advance. • Take pics in the Photoautomats! The city has photobooths everywhere, definitely get some photos as a memory. We paid 3-5€ for a set of 4 pics :)

Is Berlin safe for women?

Crime index

Berlin is not very safe. But it really depends on the area. Especially, schönleinstraße or Kottbussertor .. are risky areas and you should pay extra attention to. Just be over all attentive and watch out for weirdos.

It depends on where you are, in which district, and at what time. In general, the city is relatively safe, especially during the day, so you don't have to worry much. On weekends, even at night, public transport is very busy, so you don't feel alone. However, harassment often occurs at parties, for example, or if you're a woman out alone at night in Kreuzberg, Neukölln, or Mitte, you'll occasionally be approached, which can quickly become unpleasant.

Meet locals in Berlin

Yunfan

Yunfan

About Me

Hi, I'm Yunfan, a student from China currently studying in Berlin. I love taking long walks in parks and capturing the beauty of the seasons with my camera. I'm always hoping to meet new friends here in the city. I also travel regularly—summer usually takes me to Italian islands, and in winter, I like staying at the foot of the Alps. What I enjoy most about traveling is connecting with people from different countries: sharing meals, wandering through museums, and talking about our lives and cultural differences. I write as well, and many of these experiences end up in my short novels—they’ve become some of my most treasured memories. One of the reasons I came to Berlin is because I wanted to live in a place where many cultures meet. I love hearing Italian, French, and Ukrainian spoken in supermarkets. I’m always open to learning new languages, and I’d love to exchange simple phrases—especially the ones people use to express love and care in their own language.
