Is Berlin Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Berlin is generally safe for solo female travelers. Violent crime is rare, locals are usually welcoming, and physical harassment is low. Regardless, it's important to remain vigilant, especially after dark. There is a good police presence and public transportation is usually safe at all times. However, some neighborhoods are considered less safe than others. Like in any other city, use common sense and take standard precautions like staying in well-lit areas, not disclosing you're traveling alone to strangers, and being wary if you consume alcohol.

How safe is Berlin?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Berlin generally has a high safety level. However, like in any major city, certain precautions should be taken, especially at night. Central areas and neighborhoods are typically well policed and lit. Public transportation runs around the clock and taxis are readily available. Nevertheless, sticking to well-traveled areas is advisable. Some areas might be less frequented late at night and it's always important to stay aware of the surroundings. Walking alone is generally safe but caution should always be exercised.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Berlin is widely used by locals and tourists due to its efficiency and comprehensive network. You can conveniently travel all across the city without feeling unsafe, even into the early hours of the morning. However, like any other large city, pickpocketing can be an issue so stay vigilant about your belongings and be cautious of your surroundings. Overall, Berlin's public transport can be considered safe for solo female travelers.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Berlin, being a modern and liberal city, has relatively few issues of street harassment. Although incidences can occur, as they can anywhere, most of the areas that tourists frequent are safe and well patrolled. You may occasionally encounter some rude comments or unsolicited attention especially during the night. Still, residents are generally welcoming and respectful towards women. You can feel confident about navigating the city independently. Nonetheless, we advise using common sense and being aware of your surroundings in less crowded areas or later at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Berlin, as a global city, generally maintains a low rate of petty crimes. Although instances of theft and pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded areas and public transportation, they are not rampant. The locals are typically respectful and helpful to tourists. However, staying alert and aware of your surroundings is always recommended for any traveler.

I went there for a concert and overall the city was quiet nice and I definitely felt really safe, especially through the day, but even in the later hours I still felt safe while going back to my hotel

Family travel

*Quite safe *Recommend traveling on weekends, many cute art and antiques markets! *I lived near Zoo station, the alley was stinky… *The Supermarket under the bridge is cheap, but my mother encountered a wanderer (he was eating the food on the cabinet without paying, not attacking but a little bit scary) *There’s a small Strawberry shop outside the Bahnhof Südkreuz, very fresh and cheap! *Also recommend the parks near Südkreuz, less people and great view

Solo travel

It was fun I can’t lie. Berlin is safe and there’s a lot to do at all times and the people in Berlin are unbelievably fun. Some might seem rude but that’s just because you haven’t been to germany before haha. German culture is not for the week.

I spent a full day in Berlin during my Interrail Trip in Febuary 2023. I absolutely loved loved loved the Berlin Wall, so please visit it when you get the chance. We saw all major sightseeing landmarks in just one day, most notably the Brandenburger Tor, the Judendenkmal, the Weltzeituhr and many more.

Solo travel

I felt mostly safe, my biggest enemy was ice which was everywhereee and I almost slipped a few times (I wore Dr. Martens which are the only winter shoes I have). Main focus of my yourney was kpop concert(Ateez) so I went to kpop and pop up shops, Asia store (for some korean snacks) visited Eastern Wall, spent some time on Alexander Platz, went to a Planetarium, saw Alexander Turm(not on the inside too expensive you can skip that), ate rolls at Cinnamood, tried Burger at Burgermeister, went to some asian restaurant (Mizumi), tried the allegedly best Boba Tea in Berlin at Cokebuy (personally was not the best), ate the best dumplings at Dumplingworld (I think) and went to a kpop party. All in all amazing experience. Traffic is amazing, you can easily arrive anywhere you need as long as you have google maps and understand even a bit of language although almost everyone speaks English in Berlin.

Is Berlin safe for women?

Safety index

3.8 /5

Based on 226 local experiences

Crime index

2.5 /5

Id say as a local this is the safest I can feel in any city as a women. But that’s only cuz I just know how to act and which parts are maybe more dangerous than others. Also during night it’s very important to look like a tourist as least as possible. For someone who doesn’t know the city it can get dangerous ofc but that’s the same in every European city I guess.

About Me

Hello! Greetings! I'm Kathryn! I just finished my degree in history and creative writing and am currently planning a long-winded trip (or pilgrimage, of sorts) across Europe with a goal see that even in our anxious world, there are still pockets of beauty everywhere. In the meantime, I live in a suburb just outside of Vancouver, BC. I once met up at a local coffee shop with a sister from the Host a Sister Facebook group, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it! I really like getting to hear about another person's culture as I am super curious about what it's like to live in other parts of the world. Unfortunately, I don't really think I can host you as I am living with my parents at the moment because of this crazy Vancouver housing crisis, but one day soon when I move into my own place I would really like to host women and show them around Vancouver to give back to this community. In the mean time, I would love to meet up with you! If you're visiting Vancouver and the greater Vancouver area, I would be happy to meet up with you or take you for coffee somewhere. I can give you all kinds of information, like what it's like living in "The Loneliest City in the World," or give advice on places to eat, or day trips to take from Vancouver without a car (as I have experience exploring BC car free as I don't drive) or maybe we could go hiking together?
