How safe is Hamburg?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Hamburg, generally provides a secure atmosphere, particularly in well-populated city areas. A large network of well-maintained, well-lit streets, combined with an efficient public transportation system, contributes to nighttime safety. While incidents of crime are not unheard of, they are relatively uncommon. However, as with any large city, there are some areas you would be advised to avoid at night. Always be aware of your surroundings and use common sense, especially when walking alone.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Hamburg, is a popular option among residents and visitors alike. It is generally considered to be safe for solo female travelers. Trains and buses are clean, frequent, and operate with strict timetables. Traveling late at night might be a little less comfortable due to fewer passengers and reduced frequency of services. However, isolated incidents can occur, as in any major city, so it's important to maintain situational awareness, especially during off-peak times.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Hamburg is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. While occasional incidents of street harassment could occur, as they could in any large city, they are not very common. Local authorities are responsive to such issues and public safety is well maintained. However, it's still crucial to exercise standard precautions, stay in well-lit, populated areas, and avoid late-night solitary walks especially in unfamiliar areas.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Hamburg, generally enjoys a low level of petty crimes. However, like any large city, it is advisable to stay alert and take basic security precautions. The most common forms of petty crime in Hamburg include pickpocketing or minor theft, particularly in crowded places like public transportation or touristic points. It's always a good practice to keep your belongings secure and not leave your personal items unattended.

I felt safe, i just had to watch out on the streets with clubs. I would recommend going to Kunsthalle museum and if you like going out then Reeperbahn. My restaurant recommendation is block house. I stayed at my sister’s so she drove me around but there is local bus and a train.

Family travel

We were in Hamburg. The city has many activities. Like take a boat trip. I was at the musical "Harry Potter and the cursed chıld". The city library is huge. In the basement, used/old books, audio books, films and games are sold at a reasonable price.

Solo travel

I felt most of the time safe. Around the trainstations in Hamburg it is not that safe. Especially at Hauptbahnhof. I liked the Bunker. There you can go up for free and have a beautiful view over the city. Additionally I was in "Naschcafé" which i can recommend. The food there is really good. Also "Falafelprinz" at Schanze. You can get there cheap Falafelwraps. If you like to go into a museum, you should try "Deichtorhallen" or "Kunst und Gewerbe". All in all, it was a really nice trip.

Discovering Hamburg for the first time. It is an atypical city, very interesting with several aspects. I really enjoyed walking along the river and taking the public boat that allows you to discover the city. The architecture of the city as well as its monuments and churches are magnificent. I recommend spending at least 2 days there and if you are lucky with beautiful sunshine. Concerning the food, you absolutely have to try a fish sandwich on the port. On the other hand, it is a city that can be dangerous for a girl alone. Especially the area next to the station.

Couple travel

Hamburg is safe, nice and beautiful! I loved to walk around in the summer evening without any problems or anyone bothering, the food is nice and there are many places to visit. My favorite places were the streets with Portuguese restaurants, specially the cafe Crystal, where I used to have my breakfast. I would definitely go again.

I loved everything about the city the buildings the landscapes, the river there , how good looking the people were, the food as well especially that they surve turkish food. I enjoyed my experience it was full of museums including the music museum which waa for free, u can also have a boat tour and sunbathe by the sea. I love Hamburg

It highly depends on where you are - the main train station is horrible, but the further away you get, the better it gets. For visiting I would advise to get away from hotels that are on the Reeperbahn, it's the party corner. Very loud and a lot of drunk men.

I feel very safe in Hamburg during the day, but at night, like most big cities, I wouldn't want to walk alone in less frequented districts. But I've never been robbed or harassed and during the day never worried that anything bad would happen to me.

Meet locals in Hamburg

About Me

Hi, I‘m Emily! I’ve been on holidays with my parents since I was a little girl. When I got older I started traveling with friends. The first time I traveled further away without my parents was truly eye opening for me. I finally felt free and self-determined. I enjoyed planning my trips, organizing what was needed and being in charge of myself, finally listening to what my soul was telling me and putting it into action. That’s when I decided to try solo-traveling. I‘ll begin my very first solo trip in February and will travel through Southeast Asia for approximately 4 months. If anybody would like to meet up or travel together for a bit, feel free to message me! 💕 Meeting new people along the way is actually one of the things I’m most excited about during this upcoming trip (coming from a fellow introvert, haha)!
