Is Rennes good for solo travel?

Safety:

Safety:Very safe

Rennes is generally safe for solo female travelers. Like any city, there are certain precautions you should take, but overall it has a low crime rate, respectful locals and easy navigation. Always stay aware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas at night, and choose well-populated, well-lit areas. As a rule of thumb, exercise the same precautions you would in any large city.
Transport:

Transport:Easy

Rennes is fairly accessible for solo female travelers. The city center is compact and walkable, and there's a reliable public transportation system including trams and buses. However, you might encounter some language barriers if you don't speak French, but locals are generally helpful. Do plan your travel well in daytime hours and take safety precautions at night.
Things to do:

Things to do:Interesting

Rennes is filled with rich history, stunning architecture, and spectacular cuisine. The city offers a multitude of attractions that could pique any traveler’s interest. From exploring the traditional half-timber houses in the old town, shopping at local markets, to relishing the culinary delights on Rue Saint-Michel, also known as Rue de la Soif due to its numerous bars, there's always something to do. The Parc du Thabor is great for relaxation and people watching. Art lovers would appreciate the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts). Though Rennes may not be as recognized as Paris or Nice, it is a vibrant, authentic and less touristy city that provides a true taste of French culture.
Food:

Food:Above average

The gastronomic scene in Rennes is impressive. You can venture on a culinary journey that encompasses local Breton specialties such as crepes and seafood, as well as a myriad of international cuisines. There's a broad selection of bakeries, patisseries and cheese shops for the food lovers. Despite of its richness, vegetarian and vegan options can be slightly limited which prevents it from earning a perfect score.
Budget:

Budget:Moderate

Rennes sits in the middle of the cost scale. Accommodations and dining can be moderately priced, especially if you choose homestays, budget hotels or bistro-style eateries. However, costs can rise if opting for high-end establishments or numerous paid attractions. Transportation is relatively affordable, with options like biking, walking, or reliable public transit.

Solo travel experience

Lived in Rennes for a year. Very safe area as a solo woman. Not as many expats in this area. I would recommend learning some French to make communication easier when needed. Close to tourist areas like Saint Malo or Mont Saint Michel (both 1 hour distance).

Is Rennes safe for women?

It's often busy in town, this is reassuring. Rennes is a pretty safe city where we can go out in the evening, it's a great place to live except for bicycle theft, Homeless people who can sometimes be aggressive and demonstrations. Don't worry about visiting this city

On comparaison to other cities in France, I believe it’s fairly safe in Rennes. Beside from cat calling sometimes, I’ve never really felt unsafe here. I also noticed that when someone is getting harassed and other people notice it, it will rise some reaction in solidarity.
