I spend 7 weeks in Montpellier for a language course and it was so much fun! The city is beautiful and in my experience pretty safe (except for cat calling and some pickpockets). There are great daytrips possible to Marseille or Sête, which also are very pretty and popular. Or you can visit the Museums, beach or other attractions in Montpellier itself. As an 18 year old I partied a lot in the Clubs Panama (esp. the Latina floor/2nd floor) and Le Club. It’s definitely not cheap, but when has...

I stayed with local woman who hosted me in her beautiful apartment for one night. It was amazing experience. First we had a coffee and little chat in one of the cute coffee places and then we went to her place to have a dinner and a bit of wine. After that she gave me her keys so I could come back whenever I wanted. I connected with one more french girl, so I went for a drink with her. I came back slightly after 22 and next day I left early to be able to discover the city. I went to Musée Fabre...

Montpellier is a very beautiful city, I lived there for 6 years, it's really a pleasant city with lots of beautiful things to visit. During the day it's fine, no problem, but at night there are some places where you need to be careful and maybe not be alone.
Posted: February 7, 2026Montpellier is a safe city, especially if you stay in the city center. Don’t go in the Northern Neighbourghoods, La Mosson is the worst one, or in Croix d’Argent in the South which is not really safe. However, don’t go in the parks, even in the center, when the sun has set.

There most are theft in the city. You have to pay attention to your stuff. But people would be kind to you if you get lost, you don't have to be affraid to talk to someone. Whoever, you may prefer to talk with young people. They are ofter more open minded.

Montpellier is generally safe for tourists, but like any major city, it comes with a few caveats. If you’re planning to explore the city, a bit of street smarts and awareness will go a long way.
