How safe is Birmingham?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Birmingham is just like any other large city. It also generally depends on which parts of the city you're in. Some areas are quite safe and well-lit, with a steady flow of people even late into the night. However, certain parts might not be as safe after dark, especially if you are walking alone. Always use common sense, stay in well-lit and populated areas, and avoid showing off high worth items like expensive phones or jewelry. Local people are usually welcoming and willing to help if needed.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Birmingham, is overall very safe. It is served by a network of buses, local trains, and trams providing extensive coverage across the city. The system operates under high security standards and regular patrolling. The presence of CCTV cameras increases the feeling of security. However, like any location, it's important to maintain personal awareness and belongings' care, especially during rush hours and late at night.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Birmingham in the United Kingdom is generally safe for solo female travelers. Street harassment issues are not prominent and the residents are typically respectful. However, it is always a good idea to stay alert, particularly during late-night hours, in less crowded places, or while using public transport. Social customs and norms in Birmingham ensure that harassment is not widely tolerated, leading to a relatively secure environment.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Like any bustling city, Birmingham does experience its share of petty crime, such as pickpocketing, especially in crowded tourist areas and public transportation. While it's generally a safe city to travel, one should still take standard precautions. Keep an eye on your belongings, avoid showing off valuable items in public, and avoid less crowded areas at night.

Family travel

I visited Birmingham with my mom and baby, and while it felt pretty safe overall, I was honestly underwhelmed. There were a lot of homeless people around, and the city felt very dirty, especially on the weekends. Airbnb rentals were surprisingly expensive, and while the food wasn’t bad, it was pretty average and not as affordable as I expected. The tourist attractions and historic sites were free, which was nice, but they didn’t really stand out. For 9 days, we spent around £2000, and it just didn’t feel worth it. I’ve never felt this unimpressed by a city before.

Solo travel

Birmingham is big city a bit chaotic but very well connected by public transport. The Victoria square and the library are great places to spend the afternoon. Birmingham is multicultural so you cam also find great food from all around the world

Solo travel

I studied in birmingham. School activities are quite nice as in sports and so on. I lived in a student area which mostly felt safe. Weather is always grey so far but hoping for better. Everything is fairly expensive

Solo travel

- stayed in Selina during my stay in Birmingham which was quiet but pretty nice hostel so that was sweet, didn’t really like the area though (walking around in early evening felt pretty unsafe) - had a yummy brunch and dinner and there was a realm of different types of food to eat - very walkable place and I’m sure there would be more to do in the summer but loved the vibes and the people so overall good experience !!

Solo travel

Go to the top floor of the library to see the view of the city, stroll around the Jewellery Quarter and perhaps visit the local goldsmith museum. In the centre of Birmingham, there is a charming shopping gallery. In this gallery, there is a cosy place called Morridge, which is great for a moment of relaxation during a day of walking around the city.

For the most part, if you do the regular things we do in any larger city, you’ll be fine. It’s not as bad as Paris or Rome or any of the incredibly large cities though. Just be aware of people walking around you, keep your eyes open and don’t walk down alleys alone and you will be fine.

You cannot generalise Birmingham. I feel safe in the city center as long as I'm in crowded well lit areas. I'm comfortable using public transport to leave Birmingham mainly the train. If I am leaving significantly late I'd get a taxi as my transportation

About Me

Hey, I’m Misty, and I’m 45 years old. I was born and grew up in America, but have lived in the UK for the last 15 years. I live with my partner and French Bulldog, Karma, but I like to travel a bit more than they do 😁 I’m mainly interested in exploring Europe and the UK at the moment, but I’m still dreaming about the other places I want to explore! I’m a really low maintenance travel buddy if you ever need one. Happy to do my own thing, but I’ll also check to make sure you’ve not been murdered. Equally, I will literally talk your ear off, don’t encourage me by laughing at my jokes 😜
