How safe is Cambridge?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Cambridge, UK, is generally considered quite safe—even after dark. However, like in any city, it's important to stay vigilant and take common safety precautions, particularly while walking alone. The streets are often well-lit, and the city centre is usually bustling with people, even late into the night. Using main roads, rather than shortcuts or dimly lit alleyways, can also enhance your safety in the city. The police service is known to be reliable and emergency services are usually promptly available. Bringing the usual travel essentials such as a mobile phone, charger, money, photocopies of your passport, etc. and being aware of your surroundings are effective ways to help ensure your personal safety.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Very safe

Public transportation in Cambridge is highly secure and reliable. The city's bus and train services operate timely and cater well to the needs of solo women travellers. Night buses continue to run, which makes after-dark traveling possible and largely safe. Moreover, the drivers are professional and considerate which contributes to an overall comfortable and secure journey. The presence of CCTV cameras and passenger guidelines add extra layers of security to their public transportation.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Cambridge, is known for its educational institutions, and generally, possesses a safe and welcoming atmosphere. While isolated incidents of street harassment may occur, they are not common. It is always important for solo female travelers to remain vigilant, especially during the late evenings. Keep in mind that Cambridge is a popular tourist destination, so crowded areas may experience occasional instances of unideal situations.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Cambridge is considered a relatively safe city with a low occurrence of petty crimes. However, as in any urban area, it's always important to remain vigilant, especially in crowded places where pickpocketing might occur. Also, bike theft is an issue in Cambridge due to the prevalent use of bicycles. Overall though, safety precautions should suffice for a safe visit.

Loved seeing the old historic buildings and especially the buildings that surround the center. It does get a bit boring if you are staying there for more than a couple days. But it has great transport and feels very safe

Cambridge is really close to Stansted airport, i just took a train to go there. It is a place full of history and you can feel the studious and chill atmosphere. Do not hesitate to do a river tour. You will see the back of the universities with some informations from your guide and it worth it.

Solo travel

I went to Cambridge to study for a week. it was my first trip abroad and I was alone, as an anxious person I can say that Cambridge is safe, people are helpful and kind. it is a very popular place for tourists and students, full of parks and it's quite clean. it's easy to find your way around (except for the parks... they're all similar and I always got lost), I used the bus to move from one side of the city to the other, but it's also doable on foot, however the ticket didn't cost much. I was there to study in the morning, so I had breakfast and then went to class, during the afternoon I loved going to the bookshop (Waterstones) and ate at Byron's (the best burgers I've ever eaten). I often went to the park or visited nearby towns (for example, I saw Shakespeare's house). I had a budget of £100, and I came home with some left over. It's a truly beautiful place, I fell in love with it.

The university has a vibe of dignity. There was a former student sharing her studying experience and the history behind each of the school architecture, which was an unforgettable experience. I'm glad that I chose to go to Cambridge.

Cambridge feels very safe, particularly in the touristy areas. I regularly walk home alone after a night out and have never had a negative experience. The crime rate is very low. Bouncers within the clubs or pubs are very proactive and professional.

Cambridge is a fairly safe city, but I would still not walk home alone at night with headphones on. Like in most towns, people get loud after a night out, but few bother you. The main thing that gets stolen is bicycles, as that’s the main mode of transportation- you can get anywhere in 10/15mins tops. Because of this, it’s worth always using a D or U lock and making sure it’s locked to something, not just itself. If you’re a pedestrian, you MUST look both ways before stepping off the payment, even a foot, or someone may collide with you - there are electric scooters and cyclists typically going both ways, and cars. Don’t be fooled by the pretty cobbled streets, they are functioning roads and have people or cars whizzing down them all day and night, tourists will have a leisurely mosey smack in the middle of them, often stopping completely to take photos. When they do they are playing with serious injury and relying on the cyclist being skilled at stopping or swerving at high speed.
