Is Australia Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Australia is generally safe for solo female travelers. The country employs strict law enforcement and locals are known for their friendly attitude towards tourists. However, like any other place, certain common-sense precautions need to be taken, especially at night, such as not walking alone in deserted areas or parks. Wildlife encounters can also pose a threat since Australia is home to some of the world's most poisonous animals. Overall, with a bit of planning and vigilance, it can be a fantastic and safe destination for solo female travelers.

How safe is Australia?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Australia is generally a safe place at night, as long as you maintain a common sense approach. Cities like Melbourne and Sydney have a vibrant nightlife that is heavily patrolled by police, making the main streets relatively safe. However, it's always wise to avoid isolated or poorly lit areas, and always be aware of your surroundings. Solo female travelers should consider using reputable transportation companies when traveling at night. Overall, the primary concern should be having a good awareness of the situation around you.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Australia's public transportation systems, including buses, trains, and trams, are widely recognized to be safe and convenient. While usual vigilance is always necessary, particularly during late-night travel, the majority of routes are well-lit, monitored, and serviced frequently. Authorities take safety and security seriously and there is generally a helpful culture among the commuters.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Australia is generally a respectful and welcoming place with a prominently laid-back culture where street harassment isn't a widespread problem. However, like all places, there can be isolated incidents. Instances of street harassment vary from city to city, and also depend on the time of day and the area you are in. Overall, Australia prioritizes safety and respect but always be alert and aware of your surroundings as an individual traveler.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Australia is generally a safe country with low rates of petty crime. However, like in any other place in the world, there can be isolated incidents of pickpocketing or purse-snatching, particularly in crowded, tourist-heavy places. Travelers are advised to take basic precautions like keeping their belongings secure and being aware of their surroundings, especially in crowded places or at night. While Australia ranks well in terms of safety, it is always best to stay vigilant to avoid any possible petty crimes.

Western Australia, Group travel

Western Australia is a hidden gem of Australia. Everyone goes to the eastern side but there is so much untouched land on the Western side. They have the nicest beaches I’ve ever seen as well as snorkelling right off the beach. I felt mostly safe in WA. There was a few same towns that made me uneasy but no real dangerous encounters. I would avoid the town of Carnarvon if possible. If you can, stay in Fremantle as opposed to Perth. Lot of free camping options in WA. We rented a camper van and stayed in campsites most of the time which helped the budget. Download WikiCamps Aus to find the free sites. People post reviews of the campgrounds as well if you’re worried about safety. We travelled from Perth up North to Exmouth and came back down. I’m dying to go back there again because I loved it so much. Definitely choose the time of year you go wisely tho bc the hot weather and flies can be intense. I recommend doing the whale shark swim if you have the time and money for it. Once in a lifetime opportunity.

Western Australia, Family travel

I went to Perth in August for a month with my sister (she was 16yo) and with my grand mother(76yo). We visited her sister (82yo). And in Perth we visited the first week, then we rented a camper for 2 weeks (Camper Days) [Perth-Hyden with the Wave Rock- Esperence with the Lucky Bay- Jeramungup with Point Ann where we saw whales-Albany-Denmark-Pemberton with the Valley of the Giants- Busselton with the underwater observatory-Bunbery with the dolphin-Perth] I was only 19 but I drove all the road trip and it was like a dream really to be so far away, in the middle of nowhere with my sister and the other generation of sister in the back of the camper( my sister was my co-pilote with Google maps, we took a special internet package with 7Go for the outback). From France (go and back) the plane tickets cost 1500€ In Australia for 1 month per person it cost 1400€ with my share in the camper rent, food, national parks tickets, gasoline, camper site in caravan park, souvenirs... I will never forget this road trip!! Here poeple are nice, the locals help you when you are lost or when you don’t understand something. And the other travelers share their tips in the caravan parks around the barbecues. We were 4 women and we always felt safe, I had my sister under my responsability but it was fine and even if my grand mother doesn’t speak English, everything went very well ! (When I had a small problem with the wipers, the camper rental agency immediately answered the phone and directed me to the nearest garage) If you want to discover beatiful wide open spaces and many unique animals, go to Western Australia ☀️

Sydney, Solo travel

I felt very safe in Sydney. You can get anywhere pretty fast, the busses are good. With the bike as well, but the city is definitely not build for bikes, there are a lot of red lights and surprisingly many hills. The museums are fucking awesome. Many of them for free. Check out the wednesday Museum night Events!

Airlie Beach, Solo travel

Very nice but small Great views, great tours. But needs to be planed with a good budget as the tours are a bit pricey Lots of mosquitos, sting season and wet season can change the plans a bit. Bus is 50 cents but if you don’t have a car 3 days is more than enough

Sydney, Solo travel

If you are in Sydney in October you need to go see the whales, it is such an amazing experience! You can go to the Harbour and buy a ticket and go alone without any problem. Also don’t miss out on all the beaches Sydney has to offer (Bondi, Bronte, Coogee, Tamarama, Manly, etc). The beaches are also very safe but swim between the flags!!

the cities are the safest place in the world except for the outback, Darwin and Alice Springs. things to do is explore the nature that this amazing country has to offer. Melbourne: I can recommend Fleet Rooftop Bar in, I was working there. Storyville, a club that is free if you work in hospitality, just show them your payslip at the entrance. Turbo 322, it’s a night club in a kitchen LMAO. Mixue has the cheapest ice cream. Brisbane: every wednesday in the southbank area there is a free market where you can get free food. a good night club is Ric’s. Sydney: take a ferry and go wherever you want, at night it’s amazing to see the opera theatre from the sea. Here are very famous hidden pubs. Darwin: I wouldn’t recommend to take the bus at night and walk alone. Darwin you can visit it in an hour, is very small but if you go there in the dry season, is full of backpackers and I had so much fun. I met the best people of my life here. Good to renew the working holiday visa. Everywhere: For groceries go to Aldi to save money. For cheap clothes go to Vinnies, second hand clothes but very good, you can also donate. K-Mart, has clothes and everything cheap. And DAISO Japan is the best.

Australia, Solo travel

definitely felt safe but it’s also a huge country so you will probably find unsafe places (I heard bad things about alice springs but also never went there so I can’t say how unsafe you would feel there). Other then that I felt really safe and met loads of people who will try to help you if you need there help. Definitely recommend it to travel solo. Just be aware that it’s pretty expensive. But if you work there you will be fine

Melbourne

Melbourne is generally pretty safe, certain areas are worse than others. I don’t like walking alone at night to be on the safe side. Always travel with caution, and ideally not alone during the night. Other than that it’s a super welcoming and fun place to visit!

About Me

Hi lovely humans, my name is Alice but I go by Ali, my favourite colour is purple and I’m from lower South Australia. I am lgbtqi+, SW and 420 friendly! I am solo traveling overseas for the first time this year and am super keen to make some friends on the way! I am very open minded, down to earth, bubbly and love some banter. I’m down for getting our steps up, eating too much, partying hard, relaxing as we deserve, and everything between! This year a goal of mine is to get over my fear of horses and go on a ride, if anyone can help me with this 💜
