How safe is Australia for women?

Ballarat

walk around at night with a friend and keep out of dark alleys and avoid area around little bridge street at night if you're in ballarat central. avoid people who look to be under the influence of drugs, ballarat does have a large meth problem as well as decently high homeless population

Sydney

In the inner city, eastern and western suburbs, Sydney is the safest place I’ve ever lived (including Oxford and Vancouver) - I’m happy to walk home in the very early hours, there’s nowhere that feels unsafe. There is no pick pocketing, almost no physical violence towards women who are strangers (it’s usually men attacking men). There is a problem of domestic violence in Sydney and throughout Australia, but it’s comparatively low compared to similar countries (e.g UK) and very low compared to developing countries. Greatest threats to women in Aus are intimate partners and drunk lads on a night out.

Brisbane

Brisbane is normally pretty safe. There are heaps of sketchy characters around on public transport and at night. Clubbing is generally okay but always go with some friends as men can be very gross and touchy.

Perth

Perth is a safe city like almost all Australia. I think that you can easy walk on the streets even in night time without any problem at all and the people around are nice and helpful in case something happen. Police is everywere and ready to help in case of needs.

Melbourne

Melbourne can seem quite sketchy sometimes, but honestly, getting to know the city and its people is the only way to feel safe. Close suburbs to Melbourne like Richmond are probably as unsafe as it gets, but Fitzroy and North Melbourne are wonderful suburbs that offer great street lighting and have safe environments

Bendigo

Bendigo, like any small city in the world is safe but you still need to exercise caution around busy bus stops and certain streets. I have walked home at night many times and feel safe. I would just use your instincts and avoid talking to people who may seem ‘dodgy’ but most people are friendly and helpful. We’re not as large and overwhelming as big cities such as Sydney or Melbourne.

Brisbane

Brisbane city is very safe during the day, there are constantly people nearby, however I wouldn’t recommend walking by yourself at night just in case. We have lots of safe suburbs, but there are some dodgy ones unfortunately.

Perth

Perth is incredibly safe! I would exercise caution in certain outer suburbs at night, and I would be careful to travel anywhere alone at night, no matter where it is in the world, but I’ve never had any issues myself growing up in Perth.

Sydney

In terms of security Sydney is an amazing place to live because I feel free to leave my home it doesn’t matter the time also in the dark. But as a woman we always need to double pay attention everywhere.

Brisbane City

I can say I have comfortably walked home at various times of the night (and early morning) and in various states of drunkenness and have felt mostly safe in all situations. It is important to stick to main roads and public transport areas and make sure there is adequate lighting around you.

Noosa Heads, Couple travel

Noosa Heads is such a lovely place. There’s lots of backpackers around and I felt more than safe walking around Hastings street and back to the Airbnb alone at night. The food can be a bit expensive but there are ways to minimise the costs and the beach views make it worth it. Lots of things to do if you enjoy beach life and surfing or even if you enjoy paddle boarding on the river!

Sydney, Solo travel

I went to Sydney for about a week to join a workshop. Whenever I go to a new country, I tend to go to places where it's specific for a certain personal purpose even if it's not a popular touristy place. To see something that I've had on my wishlist. For example when I was in Sydney for this trip, I took the train to a small suburb to see a mosque that I have been learning about for a couple of years before I even knew I'd be in Sydney one day. I also love to literally walk around a lot (because it's free!) :D

Melbourne, Family travel

I loved my time in Melbourne to the point of wanting to move there one day soon. The theatre, music and art scene was fantastic coming from small town NZ. I really enjoyed Fitzroy and Victoria market too. The food options were great although I maintain NZ does better coffee

About Me

I enjoy reading books, watching movies and TV, getting out in nature, exploring new places, trying new foods and travelling. I enjoy walking and hope to do some hiking on my travels. In the future, I'd love to walk part of the Camino Del Santiago in Spain. I love animals, good conversation, and slow travel. I don't drink alcohol anymore but I'm ok with others drinking around me and I don't smoke. I have so many places and adventures on my bucket list! I'd love to explore Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Vietnam, Cambodia, Canada, South America and Morocco (and so many more). And I'd love to bungee jump, even though it terrifies me!
