Melbourne

It’s a very safe and liveable city, but I think regardless there are some suburbs that are safer than others, especially as a young woman. I do walk home at night but I avoid dark areas and parks. It’s a good place to gisit

Adelaide

The city and suburbs of Adelaide a generally safe. There are a few suburbs out north that I would be wary of. The CBD can also be scary at night as a single woman but generally safe if you are with people.

Perth

I’ve lived in Perth for my whole life and very minimal bad things have happened to me here before. Overall i think it’s very safe, minus the very occasional negative experience that is hard to avoid all together no matter where you are.

Melbourne

I think for the most of it, Melbourne is a safe city. There are certain suburbs that feel less safe such as St Kilda and Carlton, but even those ones at daytime are alright. Public transport is pretty solid too, but particularly at night it is always safer to take precautions (such as sitting near the driver, telling someone where you are, etc).

I’ve lived here my whole life and I’m comfortable walking alone at night and we have neighbourhood watch at many places, so you can ask for help if you need. Lots of lovely people and families with kids

Hobart

Hobart is a generally safe place to be if you avoid dangerous areas like Glenorchy. There are more tourists around during the Summer months and the sun doesn’t set until 9-9:30pm so it’s light until very late, making it safer. Then during Winter months, there are 10x less tourists, meaning that there are less people around, and the sun sets at around 5pm, making it completely dark by 7pm. Regardless of seasons, I wouldn’t recommend being out after 11pm (there’s not much of a night life anyway). Public transport is great and most bus drivers are friendly, however I would again avoid any buses that go into areas like Glenorchy as they can get pretty rowdy and unpredictable quite quickly. DO NOT be careless with Tasmania’s wilderness and terrain. Yes, there are many easy, chilled, and utterly breathtaking walks, day trips, and hikes throughout the state which are 10/10 experiences and I would definitely recommend them to you if you’re coming to Tasmania, however the outdoor climate and terrain can get extremely dangerous for tourists who aren’t used to the environment, especially during Winter as temperatures can get to below 0 degrees C. Due to this, I would recommend knowing your skills and physical ability beforehand and taking them into consideration when deciding on which activities to go on. *The emergency services number in Australia is 000 if needed!

Brisbane

Brisbane feels safe as a women solo traveling, I've been out a couple of times and didn't really experience harassing from men for now. And the women community is quite supportive, caring and strong.

Sydney

I visited Sydney this March and I was all the time on my own, I used public transport and I didn't feel unsafe at any moment. My phone didn't work but it was easy to move around, if you don't have internet you can find WiFi spots around the city. The people are also helpful.

Sydney

I would say it is really safe, especially for such a big city with lots of tourists, but I've only been to cbd and east from that, idk about the western parts. I experienced sexual harassment once, since I've been there.

Is Australia worth visiting?

Perth, Couple travel

I lived in Perth for about 1.5 years and I still regret not traveling around Australia. Perth is very calm and is frequented by many international students. If you like nightlife, Perth might not be for you. There are many daytime activities and during public holidays, but except for the Northbridge area, many places close early in the evening. During the day, I always felt safe; the Aboriginal people, except for the noise they made, are harmless. But at night you have to be careful, it's better not to walk around alone in the evening, especially in less frequented areas. We lived in a car for about 8 months, with about a month spent sleeping in public areas. Besides being illegal, I advise against sleeping in open areas. Only three times did anyone knock on our door, two of which were police 😅 but the third time was quite scary.

Sydney, Solo travel

Sydney is a super great and beautiful city. It's very easy to travel around on your own. There is great public transport in the cities and you meet new people everywhere. All in all, I can recommend Sydney in Australia to anyone. There is something for everyone.

Meet locals in Australia

About Me

Hey girls! 💜 I’m Lea, 23, currently living on the Sunshine Coast. Originally from Switzerland, I came here as an exchange student and fell in love with the Aussie lifestyle. I’m always up for an adventure – whether it’s a beach day, a hike, or a cute café stop. Big fan of all things active, and I’m on a mission to finally learn how to surf (slowly but surely!). I’d love to meet new people and do fun things together! 🙌🏽😊
