Is Brisbane Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Brisbane is widely known for its high level of security. Most people, locals and tourists alike, find it to be a very welcoming environment. The level of crime is relatively low compared to other cities worldwide. The public transport is also safe to use, even during nighttime. Nonetheless, it is always recommended to remain cautious, especially when traveling alone and at night. Like any other big city, it has its safer and less safe areas, but it certainly stands out for being more secure on average.

How safe is Brisbane?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Brisbane is generally safe to walk alone at night. As with any urban area, it's always important to stay aware of your surroundings, particularly in less crowded areas. While most parts of the city are well-lit and populated even in the late hours, certain outskirts can be somewhat quiet. Overall, Brisbane has a low crime rate and is considered safe, but again, regular precautions should still be taken.

Brisbane, in general, can be considered quite a respectful city. While there might be rare instances of unsolicited comments or entering personal space, the majority of locals tend to maintain polite boundaries. Like any city, however, remaining aware of your surroundings and not being out alone late at night in unfamiliar areas is always a good rule of thumb.
Petty crimes:

Family travel

There are plenty of nice cafes and places to eat! I also love walking by the river at Kangaroo Point and New Farm or attending a salsa class in West End. However, safety at night can be a concern, I wouldn’t walk alone at night.

Solo travel

Art galleries are very cool. Great free walking tour from the Brisbane greeters. Kayak through Brisbane guided tour- fun experience but would recommend just paying to hire the kayak as it wasn’t much of a tour. I stayed in fortitude valley, and the other travellers where mostly in groups and aged 18- 24

I moved here 3 years ago and do really love it. Smaller city but expanding. So much to do with sunny coast and Gold Coast and Byron bay near. Really safe but Ofcoarse depends where in Brisbane you are just like all cities

Group travel

Public transport is quite bad and ends early on weekends. Always google and check! Do look around the University of Queensland. The great court is really pretty. The fake beach at southbank is not worth visiting. Drive up a little to Sunshine Coast and u can see more beautiful beaches. Noosa's Hell's Gate hike was the prettiest hike I've ever been to. Saw so many wild dolphins up close and humpback whales during the whale season. The beaches are beautiful too. Drive down a little to Lamington National Park. Mount Tamborine is beautiful. The drive was really pretty too. Go even further down and u can get to Byron Bay. The lighthouse gives u really good view of the sea and you can see humpback whales there too if you are lucky!

Solo travel

The surroundings of Brisbane are charming. Without a doubt, the Gold Coast offers a more exciting urban leisure experience, and for fans of this type of entertainment, there are also theme parks there. On the Sunshine Coast, there are beautiful beaches, cafes, and restaurants. On both the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, you can find fantastic hiking trails. All the sandy islands are great, especially for diving. Cairns is definitely one of the highlights of the holidays. The town may not be the most beautiful, but it serves as a multicultural center of Australia. You can find wonderful dishes from many different cuisines. It's a place where the reef meets the rainforest, literally. You can drive 20 minutes outside the city center and swim in streams in the rainforest with crystal clear water, or take a one-hour boat trip to two islands surrounded by a reef. There are also plenty of distilleries, a few wineries, a cheese factory, markets, etc. It is a really pleasant city to enjoy the tropical climate.

Solo travel

Incredible restaurants on Southbank, criminals on the Howard Smith Wharves, it's a great place for a Sunday afternoon. Be sure to visit the Sunshine Coast, Caloundra, Mooloolaba, and Noosa. Any restaurant on Hasting Street in Noosa will be amazing. The best beaches in the world. Also, if you can get to Airlie beach, there is a fantastic catamaran tour, a journey around the Whitsundays, which will take you to the reef for snorkeling.

Brisbane is a daytime city, we are up early and active, enjoying cafes and walks along the river. It’s pretty safe during the day, you can mostly leave your bag on a table and walk away for a minute (still wouldn’t do it). Theft happens, so watch your belongings, but I wouldn’t say we have a pickpocket issue, it’s more opportunistic theft. Certain areas at night where there’s high drinking can be a little bit rowdy. I wouldn’t leave a drink unattended (as I wouldn’t anywhere in the world) and going out, stay with your friends. Nothing good really happens in Brisbane after 10pm, that’s also when most of the trouble happens. Brisbane has lots of newer and nicer venues. If you go to those spots, you don’t have issues. Some men can be disrespectful and grope/harass or take advantage of women. I am Caucasian, but have seen other races experience racism. Be careful in taxis/ride-share (the sometimes don’t respect women) and if you are single, don’t let them know. Taxis drive super slow and go the wrong way to rip you off, and all services can hit on or harass women. I always use ride share with an agreed upon rate. Never use taxis without a meter. While there’s a lot of negatives here, Brisbane is quite safe compared to Sydney and Melbourne, and the awareness you should have is definitely no different to travelling to most countries. People are generally pretty friendly and relaxed, we help a mate out and love to “take the piss” (that means joke around).
