Is Hobart safe for women?

Safety index

Crime index

1.5 /5

Based on 5 local experiences

Hobart is a generally safe place to be if you avoid dangerous areas like Glenorchy. There are more tourists around during the Summer months and the sun doesn’t set until 9-9:30pm so it’s light until very late, making it safer. Then during Winter months, there are 10x less tourists, meaning that there are less people around, and the sun sets at around 5pm, making it completely dark by 7pm. Regardless of seasons, I wouldn’t recommend being out after 11pm (there’s not much of a night life anyway). Public transport is great and most bus drivers are friendly, however I would again avoid any buses that go into areas like Glenorchy as they can get pretty rowdy and unpredictable quite quickly. DO NOT be careless with Tasmania’s wilderness and terrain. Yes, there are many easy, chilled, and utterly breathtaking walks, day trips, and hikes throughout the state which are 10/10 experiences and I would definitely recommend them to you if you’re coming to Tasmania, however the outdoor climate and terrain can get extremely dangerous for tourists who aren’t used to the environment, especially during Winter as temperatures can get to below 0 degrees C. Due to this, I would recommend knowing your skills and physical ability beforehand and taking them into consideration when deciding on which activities to go on. *The emergency services number in Australia is 000 if needed!

Unless you are going to particularly dodgy areas then there’s really nothing to worry about, Hobart is very safe compared to the rest of Australia. We get a fair share of delinquent youths and crackheads but it’s not at all anything to be scared of.

About me

Hi! My name is Leah, I'm an architect living the good life in Tasmania. I love art and culture just as much as I love unplugging and connecting with nature. I love finding underground scenes, throwing silly parties and my amazing friends here at home. I live at Kingston Beach, near Hobart. If you have a car or want to use the crappy public transport system here, feel free to hit me up about coming down my way and going snorkelling, walking near the beach or going down to the Huon Valley! I might be able to host if you seem like my kind of human. 😊
