How safe is Adelaide?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Adelaide is generally a safe city for solo female travelers even during the night. The city center and popular tourist areas are well-lit and patrol police are usually visible. However, like any other city, it's always wise to stay vigilant and avoid less populated areas or parks at night. Booking a reliable taxi or using ride-share apps is advisable if travel is necessary during late hours.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Adelaide's public transportation, which includes buses, trams, and trains, is generally safe and reliable. Stations and vehicles are well-lit and there are often security personnel on hand during peak travel times. However, like any city, it is always important to be aware of your surroundings, especially when traveling late at night. Overall, female solo travelers can rely on Adelaide's public transport with caution and confidence.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Adelaide, often referred to as the 'City of Churches,' generally exhibits a safe and respectful environment. Street harassment incidents are not common although, like in any urban area, isolated events can happen. Broader social engagement and awareness campaigns have largely contributed to minimizing such occurrences. But, always stay alert regarding your surroundings, just as a caution.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

In Adelaide, the risk of petty crimes like pickpocketing or bag snatching is relatively low. Typically, these incidents occur mostly in packed tourist areas and on public transportation. However, common sense precautions should still be taken, such as not displaying valuable items openly and remaining aware of your surroundings, especially at night or when alone. It's always important to observe your surroundings, keep your belongings close to you, and avoid flashing expensive possessions in public.
Tap water:

Tap water:Very safe

The tap water in Adelaide, is perfectly safe to drink. The city has strict regulations and standards to ensure the quality of its water. Whilst Adelaide's water might taste a bit different due to its mineral content, it poses no health risks. It's continuously monitored and tested for safety.

Is Adelaide safe for women?

L-A

I generally feel safe walking around Adelaide and have had no issues so far. People are very friendly in Adelaide and will usually step in to help if something happens. I have lived there for 10 years and have caught public transport late at night on my own from the city.

Adelaide is a safe city in general and good for solo female travellers. You can walk around the city during the day and feel safe, or ask people for directions or help and they'll generally be fairly helpful. At night it's still safe in the city, just exercise a little caution by staying in well lit areas and not going anywhere you're not sure about (trust your instincts and be safe, as you would anywhere). Like any place, some suburbs in Adelaide are safer than others so ask a local or someone at your accommodation if you're not sure. But in 40 years of living in Adelaide I've never encountered anything more troubling than a weekend drunk being a bit loud on public transport or a few teens with attitude. Drivers can be jerks sometimes so, where possible, avoid tail gating and if someone else does something stupid in traffic try to just ignore them and not engage. Usually drivers are ok but sometimes they might honk you, use a hand gesture or, very occasionally, yell at you. You'll avoid this on freeways by staying in the left lane unless you're overtaking another car. But overall Adelaide is pretty safe.

Is Adelaide worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

I highly recommend visiting the Barossa Valley in the countryside, the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale (all of them have amazing vineyards and outstanding culinary opportunities). The area around McLaren Vale also has some of the most beautiful coastlines (Port Willunga/Aldinga Beach). The city of Adelaide is small, beautiful, and easy to get around. If you want to watch an AFL match while staying in Australia, the stadium in Adelaide is smaller and not as overwhelming as those in Melbourne and Sydney. Around East Terrace, there are great shops and dining spots. Peel Street and Leigh are other places not to be missed in Adelaide for atmospheric bars and food lovers. The famous Penfolds winery is also located 10 minutes from the city.

Solo travel experience

In Adelaide, I recommend going on winery tours either to Barossa Valley or to McClaren Vale, and visiting the central markets in the CBD to try local food and products.

About Me

I enjoy reading books, watching movies and TV, getting out in nature, exploring new places, trying new foods and travelling. I enjoy walking and hope to do some hiking on my travels. In the future, I'd love to walk part of the Camino Del Santiago in Spain. I love animals, good conversation, and slow travel. I don't drink alcohol anymore but I'm ok with others drinking around me and I don't smoke. I have so many places and adventures on my bucket list! I'd love to explore Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Vietnam, Cambodia, Canada, South America and Morocco (and so many more). And I'd love to bungee jump, even though it terrifies me!
