I felt most of the time safe. Around the trainstations in Hamburg it is not that safe. Especially at Hauptbahnhof. I liked the Bunker. There you can go up for free and have a beautiful view over the city. Additionally I was in "Naschcafé" which i can recommend. The food there is really good. Also "Falafelprinz" at Schanze. You can get there cheap Falafelwraps. If you like to go into a museum, you should try "Deichtorhallen" or "Kunst und Gewerbe". All in all, it was a really nice trip.

Discovering Hamburg for the first time. It is an atypical city, very interesting with several aspects. I really enjoyed walking along the river and taking the public boat that allows you to discover the city. The architecture of the city as well as its monuments and churches are magnificent. I recommend spending at least 2 days there and if you are lucky with beautiful sunshine. Concerning the food, you absolutely have to try a fish sandwich on the port. On the other hand, it is a city that can be dangerous for a girl alone. Especially the area next to the station.

Couple travel

Hamburg is safe, nice and beautiful! I loved to walk around in the summer evening without any problems or anyone bothering, the food is nice and there are many places to visit. My favorite places were the streets with Portuguese restaurants, specially the cafe Crystal, where I used to have my breakfast. I would definitely go again.

Is Hamburg safe for women?

Safety rating

Crime rates rating

The city is generally safe but there are unfortunately pickpockets in public transportation and robbery in general (bikes, luggage, bags, wallets). There are also districts where they could be/feel less safer than others especially at night

Hamburg is overall a pretty safe city. Of course, there are some places you don’t want to be in the dark and alone, and sometimes, you have to actively ignore people who catcall you, but I’ve never experienced someone who tried to harm me. They usually only talk to you if they need food or money for you and when you decline, they don’t harass you

Getting around in Hamburg with public transportation works fine! Avoid reeperbahn or just give it a quick visit but for example in the sternschanze you can find many save places for woman and an alternative community! Try the falafel from 'Falafelstern' or have yourself delicious vegan cakes from 'Kjeks'

You have to take ride with the harbour ferry. Its inclouded in the metro ticket and you can experience Hamburg from the waterside. In "Oevelgönne/Museumshafen", you can walk along the beach of the river "Elbe".
