A relatively large number of homeless people around, some of whom are very pushy and begging. Many drug addicts who gather in the city all day. Regular riots - a lot of police presence.

It’s very safe cute and old town in the middle of nowhere but definitely worth the visit of you are in the area ☺️ You can walk around at night without feeling scared, but just be aware that it’s a small town and therefore public transport isn’t possible after 10pm to lost places.
Posted: September 24, 2025I have never in my 18 years of life in Detmold felt seriously endangered by anyone. Walking at night is not a problem, not even for a young girl. There are a couple of rough areas I wouldn't recommend going but even there the people are usually nice or they keep to themselves.
Posted: July 17, 2025Very safe! It’s a small town :) You can walk around after dark in most areas without feeling unsafe. Public transportation feels safe to me as well- of course there are aggressive people on the train sometimes but only with their words from what I’ve experienced.
