Utrecht is honestly a super safe city, even walking home alone at 3 in the morning is very safe. I have lived there for about 7 years and have only felt unsafe if there was something on the news, but that rarely happens. I would say in the seven years I have lived there, about 3 times
Posted: August 31, 2024Utrecht is a city but also a bit like a Village. Everyone travelling by bike and most things are reachable within maximum of 20minutes by bike. I bike by myself all the time, also late at night. I haven't experienced Street harassment in the 10 years I lived there. But I have to be mindful of the fact that I am white and that comes with privilege.
Posted: August 31, 2024I would say Utrecht is quite a woman-friendly place to travel to. However it does depend on what area you are staying in. I would recommend the city centre or Wittevrouwen the most, in terms of safefy.
Posted: August 21, 2024Utrecht is overall a very safe city. It is a small city so everything is walking distance. But it is also very crowded so wherever you are you will always have people around to help you when necessary.

I experience Utrecht as a warm, safe and pleasant city. I like to go out alone in the city. I always feel safe on public transport and in public places, I experience no inconvenience. As a woman, I feel a little more vulnerable at night when I walk alone through the city. I try to avoid this. I once witnessed a person at the central station pretending to be in distress and needing money for a train ticket. He worked with refinement. These and other forms of scams do occur. Good to know so you don't fall for this. In the park and at supermarkets you can encounter vagrants and beggars. I often see them asking for money or searching the garbage cans for deposit boxes. A street scene that you unfortunately encounter in several larger cities in the Netherlands. I experience no inconvenience from them. I have been scolded several times by passersby or received disapproving looks when I was with my ex-girlfriend. Homophobia occurs in the Netherlands. However, I have never felt unsafe or restrictive because of it.
Posted: August 1, 2024The overall atmosphere of the neighborhood where i live is very friendly and calm, with lots of people with children overseeing the streets. I personally never had a really negative experience except some catcalling at night in the streets more busy with nightlife

Utrecht is a safe city especially because it is usually super crowded. It's a student city with a lot of diversity and a great amount of people has a open, progressive mindset. I wouldn't mind to bike through the city centre in the evening. The residential areas around the centre are a bit more darker and more silent so it's good to always have your phone with you and avoid parks at night. But there are safe routes.
Posted: July 22, 2024Very very safe! A lot of women, vibrant student city. Nice pubs and cafés where you can go as a solo female traveler. Easy to meet other travelers. I experienced no dangerous situations or sexual harrassment.

Utrecht is a lovely city full of locals and internationals alike. The people are welcoming and open to visitors. Everybody speaks English and there are plenty of good restaurants, bars and good nightlife also. I have lived here for half of my life, and besides a few homeless and some young troublemakers on scooters, there is never anything you need to be wary of.
Posted: July 14, 2024It feels like a safe city. There is good lightning on the streets at night and in the past 6 years I haven't had any dangerous experience. There are cases of break in and stilling of bikes but nothing I've personally experienced.

Utrecht is the kind of place Amsterdam would be if there weren't so many tourists - beautiful canals and harbor cellars, a vibrant nightlife, and Miffy's house. I felt very safe there when I went out in the city alone.

I came into Utrecht after two days in Amsterdam. I really enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the bigger city but it was hard to feel like I belonged somewhere- as soon as I got into Utrecht- the smaller scale of the buildings and vibrancy of all the little cafes and stores drew me in. Although I am nearly 50, I joined in with a group of locals in their 20s for drinks and later we went dancing which was so much fun as it had been years since I’d done so. Everyone was warm and inviting. No bad vibes entire stay

We had gone to a card tournament with our group of friends, so we didn't have any other activities. There was a shopping mall in the center. There was a lot of food selection there. So, as an allergic person, it was possible for me to find some dishes. There are some gluten-free options available like, for example, at Vapiano.

Hiya! I'm a biomedical scientist with a passion for solo travel and meeting people along the way. I also love nature, (live) music, hiking, skating (on ice or wheels) and thrift shopping. I'm currently very busy finishing up my PhD so I'm not hosting or showing around right now, but feel free to message me to ask for local tips! I have plenty and I really like sharing my love for beautiful Utrecht 🥰
