Utrecht is a safe city, especially in the city center. Sexual harassment and inappropriate comments can happen but bigger clubs have people assigned to create safe environments or you can go to the personal and tell them when you are feeling unsafe. I feel safe going home at night by myself and do this often, but of course I will always be aware of my surroundings and I make sure I am always conscious. I’ve been lucky not to have experienced bad things, but that does not mean it cannot or does not happen.
Posted: March 16, 2025I feel very safe here, but there are some areas that I would avoid alone at night... I'm also aware of some people having met bad ends, but nothing have ever scared me here personally. I feel safe riding my bike ans walking/running alone
Posted: March 10, 2025Utrecht is a city with a friendly and warm atmosphere. People are always willing to help you, everyone will be able to speak english. As in any city you should watch pickpockets, but very safe overall

I love Utrecht! My bike got stolen twice but the city centre is tidy and nice. A lot of nice cafés and also a big library where you can always use the bathroom. Nice parks, but be carefull in the night. They bike fast but that's ir : ). Recommend!
Posted: March 5, 2025Utrecht is a generally very safe city to be in. It's walkable and has lots of streets with nice, cosy shops and places to visit. It's also a student city with a lot of young people and not a lot of tourists.

Utrecht is a safe enough city, I don't worry about getting hurt by anyone here, people are harmless and helpful. I also feel safe in the evening hours. If you want to travel here, don't worry about security. Of course, it is still useful to be careful with your belongings and not to go to very isolated places.
Posted: February 19, 2025Utrecht is close to the capital where a lot of tourists arrive, thus the rate of small crimes are a little higher, However, in Utrecht there is no such thing. It is a very Dutch populated city with a lot of international and Dutch students. I have been living here for almost 2 years and I have never felt unsafe.
Posted: February 18, 2025Utrecht is a lovely city. Ofcourse you have to watch your pockets in the city centre. But te city is super safe. A lot of friendly people willing to help. After going out in the middle of the night I recommend to not go home alone.
Posted: February 14, 2025Utrecht is a very safe city, it's a pretty small city and has a large student population. I have never felt uncomfortable or worried cycling/walking around the city and it's neighbourhoods, no matter the time of day/night.
Posted: January 23, 2025In the dark you should be careful for drunk and mentally ill people. Don’t go alone in dark alleys and stay safe in public transport. Furthermore just keep an eye on your belongings during the day and it is like any other European ciry

I came into Utrecht after two days in Amsterdam. I really enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the bigger city but it was hard to feel like I belonged somewhere- as soon as I got into Utrecht- the smaller scale of the buildings and vibrancy of all the little cafes and stores drew me in. Although I am nearly 50, I joined in with a group of locals in their 20s for drinks and later we went dancing which was so much fun as it had been years since I’d done so. Everyone was warm and inviting. No bad vibes entire stay

We had gone to a card tournament with our group of friends, so we didn't have any other activities. There was a shopping mall in the center. There was a lot of food selection there. So, as an allergic person, it was possible for me to find some dishes. There are some gluten-free options available like, for example, at Vapiano.

I just started to do my own '12Stedentocht' - a walking tour through all the (capitals of the) provinces in The Netherlands on a small budget, and I am looking for likeminded people and places to stay. Creative, independent, joyful, open. I value freedom, joy, kindness. Walking, wandering, wondering, pondering. Being. City, nature, offgrid, on/off the road. Books. Thinking. About thinking (etc). Camping. Open Fire. Storm. Sun. Snow. Art, photography, indie music, arthouse movies. Single at Heart. Know thyself. Serious.
