I went to Amsterdam with my mom and felt super safe the whole time. We walked around day and night, used public transport, and even during King’s Day when it was really crowded — no issues at all. People were friendly, everything was well-lit, and English is widely spoken. Just keep an eye on your bag in crowded areas. Definitely a city I’d feel confident visiting solo !
Posted: May 29, 2025In general Amsterdam is a very safe city. It is always adviced to be careful and be aware that tourist areas especially the center of Amsterdam are hotspots for nightlife, therefore you might come across people that are drunk or high. There is always a lot of police walking around so it's not inherently dangerous. I would however avoid staying in the area of Bijlmer as the area can be a little more dangerous especially at night. Other than that be sure to keep your valuables out of reach for other people and your bag close to you. Make sure you take a bag you can close as pickpocketing is quite common in tourist areas and on public transport and bigger stations mostly during rush hour.
Posted: May 25, 2025im a very anxious person, so i always feel some sense of fear. but amsterdam is very safe overall. :) just watch out for your usual pick-pockets and don’t fall for tourist traps and you’ll be all good.

Walked alone drunk more times than i can count on my hands! Wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but nothing ever happens. Prefer the festival scene over the club scene! I would definitely feel safer at a festival then at a club

I don't remember a time or moment when I felt unsafe in Amsterdam. There are a few curious people walking around, and I can imagine if you don't speak the language that can be scary. However, if you just ignore these people, I'm sure there's nothing to be worried about. I've had more experiences of strangers being helpful and friendly than the other way around
Posted: May 10, 2025Well, I am usually on my bike so that limits the interactions. I would say that the most annoying and problematic people are the group of drunk men in the center or around it. Then, as any park, if you're on your own at night, watch out because some dudes hide in trees or else but overall, Amsterdam is safe.

I lived in Amsterdam for 9 month, near the centraal station (10min walk) as I was an au pair, and I had the best time of my life. Amsterdam was such a great city and even the Netherlands as the whole country are amazing. I felt mostly safe even at night, if I felt uneasy sometimes, it was bc of tourists rather than locals. Dutch may seem distant and even rude, but they are actually kindhearted. I got to visit almost all of the city, and I hadn't been disappointed at all!! Still come there about every three months bc i miss the place too much. Great experience overall!
Posted: May 29, 2025Experienced: September, 2023Very safe, felt okay to walk home at night even as two women. The food and activities were quite expensive, so we made use of the many supermarkets and free/cheap activities such as bike riding, picnicing, walking around the canals The night life is great but do your research- there are plenty of tourist traps
