It's safe generally, especially during the day. At night, it's tough to say. Some neighbourhoods are safer than others. It also depends if you're walking alone or in a group. I've been out till night and was safe. I also know friends who go out all night and also are fine even when travelling alone. So, I would rate it 4 out of 5 in terms of safety. But still, being cautious is never a bad thing.

Amsterdam is a very liberal and lively city. It is very touristy which can make it quite chaotic at times, and provokes pickpockets. Additionally, Amsterdam has a relatively high drug consumption which influences pollution at Public places and overall atmosphere. However, apart from that, It's one of the safest cities I've ever been in. Wherever you go, there is always light and someone around. People are tolerant and do not harass you for no reason.

Amsterdam is pretty much a safe city where everyone bikes home, even in the dark after clubbing, movies and so on. We do have some expats or tourist gone missing (and occasionally) a Dutch person. In most cases people got to drunk (and high) fell in the river or canal and weren’t able to get out when getting home or hotel on their own. Be mindful of where you walk /bike at night as not all canals have little fences to warn you.

Sometimes there are pickpockets but that’s it. I was never verbally harassed or anything. I feel quite safe in this country. I think people are focused in better things than to break the law, everyone is very much in their own life, in their own path, not messing with anything or anyone.

I think Amsterdam is very safe! A specially if you stay in the touristy parts, but you also need to keep aware of pickpockets. They just know when you’re a tourist. As a local I’ve never had any bad experiences tho! And don’t be afraid of different parts of town. Amsterdam Zuid-Oost has a “bad” reputation, but honestly? There is where EVERY culture is combined. You can find delicious African food in every corner, go shopping and the vibes are just as amazing as other parts of the city. When you’re in Amsterdam, don’t be afraid to visit EVERY corner. Just don’t go to Noord, as ‘Amsterdammer’ I don’t even consider that part of our city😂.
Posted: February 28, 2025Amsterdam is fairly safe during the day. At night, beware of cat calling in certain areas and groping in certain establishments (for example, the waterhole on Leidseplein - we go there only with guy friends). I was followed on a few occasions in dark and lonely areas. Many girls don't make this experience and feel safer in Amsterdam than I do. Unfortunately, I have made more uncomfortable experiences than most of my female friends.
Posted: February 14, 2025After 6 months living here, I've never perceive any kind of serious threat. I'd say that the city is overall well controlled in the main/central districts, which are the ones i normally visit. I can tell less about the suburbs, which might have a different reputation. All in all, I think some standard rules apply to Amsterdam when visiting it alone as a woman: be mindful when you go out late at night (past a certain hour it's possible to have weirder encounters) and try to avoid very turisty/dingy places such as the Red light district.
Posted: February 6, 2025I would say it’s pretty safe here. There are some districts are not recommended to wander around at night. But in general, people are friendly, and I see police officers quite often on streets and stations.
Posted: February 5, 2025More less is safe but it has these places where drugs are the mandatory thing better to avoid them for example biljmer arena or sloterdijk some places can be dangerous others not that much I'm not a local but people told me this information. My place is really nice and quiet because is locates on the oost part. Don't stay at the park at night if you see drunk people can be dangerous.

I would say amsterdam was pretty safe as a female traveler but you always have to watch out for pickpockets. I have been out till late night and did not feel unsafe. The public transport system is also very good and efficient.

Absolutely AWESOME city!!!! Made me want to move there actually, everything is accessible, a little expensive, and so so beautiful. When I went out alone I felt very safe, and even in the evening there wasn't any danger at all
Posted: April 24, 2025Experienced: January, 2024I spent 2 days (1 night) in Amsterdam during my Interrail trip in 2023. While it was a short time, it was enough to visit all landmarks and visit some museums. The van goth museum is truly amazing. I stayed with my now ex girlfriend in The flyinf pig for the night, which isn't the best choice for people sensitive to the smell of weed since the hostel has a smoking area

Hi, I’m a born and raised Amsterdammer😉. I’m a law student that loves reading and drinking matcha!
Cheyenne
Hi! Nice to meet you!😊 My name is Cheyenne. I am a Dutch local and student living in Amsterdam with my cat🐱. I study philosophy and physics, with a minor in International Development Studies. Aside from being a student, I like to play the guitar, travel, do yoga and meditation and I really love the arts, philosophy, psychology, politics, music, culture and being in nature. I would describe myself as a very openminded, welcoming, curious and compassionate person who loves going on random adventures and connecting authentically with people. At the moment I am planning on travelling to South Asia this summer (India, Nepal, Sri Lanka). Do message me if you also want to go there this summer🤠 I am here to connect with amazing women from around the world! Thought I’d give this app a try since I am really into traveling, learning more about different cultures and making new connections. I’ve backpacked through south east asia and it is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I would really love to get to know more about you, your culture and experiences. I really believe that seeing different parts of the world and meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds is truly enriching and essential for growing more compassion and understanding. For this reason, I would be so grateful for you sharing your culture with me, and of course, I would be more than happy to share mine with you! Please feel free to message me ☺️, whether this about you wanting to meet up in Amsterdam, if you want to hang out, if you need help and tips in Amsterdam, or maybe you are a local in some place I will be travelling to, or literally anything else!
