Groningen is a student city, lots of nightlife, I've never felt unsafe in the city. I walked alone at night many times and always felt safe. People are very welcoming and there are many international people, everyone speaks English
Posted: November 3, 2024I've lived in Groningen for about 4,5 years and never had a reason to feel truly unsafe. Of course, caution should be exercised when participating in the night life (always protect your drink!), but even going out can be done alone.
Posted: August 28, 2024Groningen is a safe, small city with many students. As there is a sparkling, young nightlife, there are often more people on the streets. However as with any city there are streets you should not walk alone at night (still chances are low something will happen).
Posted: July 19, 2024I cycled back home at varying times during the night for many years and only had a problem a few times so I would say Groningen is relatively safe. Be careful as you go out of the city into the countryside because this is where I encountered casualties.
Posted: July 17, 2024In general, Groningen is a rather safe city located in the Northern part of The Netherlands. Based upon my personal experiences, I would say that it is certainly a lot safer than other, more well-known Dutch cities, such as Amsterdam. While I would suggest to not go outside all alone as a women when it’s dark outside, incidents with men are relatively rare and an exception to the rule. If they do, however, occur, local and international women alike are keeping an eye out for one another. They are quick to help someone out, intervene if necessary, make sure someone is okay and stay with someone until they know that person is safe.

Students mostly live here so I always feel safe even when I am walking home at 4 AM through the park. Usually the crowd dies down around 6 and students start going out to the city almost ever week day hence its very safe

I love visiting Groningen - I absolutely recommend renting a bike to get the actual local authentic experience. The city museum is just fantastic, food options are diverse and exciting, lots of nice bars and cofee places, especially in the city centre and close to Rijksuniversity. The park is also a must see, and coffeeshops are safe also for a solo travellers that wants to try!
Posted: July 23, 2024Experienced: July, 2024Groningen is an absolutely beautiful university city that is definitely worth visiting during a train trip to the north. Its stunning architecture and lively nightlife every day of the week, full of young people, are captivating. I felt very safe there.
