I love visiting Groningen - I absolutely recommend renting a bike to get the actual local authentic experience. The city museum is just fantastic, food options are diverse and exciting, lots of nice bars and cofee places, especially in the city centre and close to Rijksuniversity. The park is also a must see, and coffeeshops are safe also for a solo travellers that wants to try!
Posted: July 23, 2024Experienced: July, 2024Groningen is an absolutely beautiful university city that is definitely worth visiting during a train trip to the north. Its stunning architecture and lively nightlife every day of the week, full of young people, are captivating. I felt very safe there.

So far so good! Still got a few days to spare, but I've seen some of the city and explored a bit on Mt own without any problems.

I’ve personally never felt unsafe in Groningen, but make sure to lock your bike!! And beware there can be a lot of drunk students in the city centre, mostly on the weekends and on Thursday nights :) They can be really fun and nice, but it’s something you should know before you stumble into the centre and see so many (drunk) people!
Posted: June 2, 2026Groningen is quite safe, the city centre is mostly students, although there can be some creepy men during night outs, have never felt actually scared for my safety
Posted: March 22, 2026Generally it is a really safe city!! Occasionally as woman alone at night the small streets and less busy areas of the city centre can feel a bit sketchy when there are people hanging around intoxicated for example. It is a city with a lot of students and therefore a vibrant night life, having the positives of many people being around and great stuff to do, but sometimes can also lead to uncomfortable interactions on occasion. I would emphasize that it is overall a really safe and comfortable...
Posted: March 7, 2026Groningen is a very safe city :) No red flags so far, and I have been here for 6 years now! The people are nice and friendly. They even speak English mostly, so you can always ask almost anyone for help too.

My name is Marije. I've been travelling a lot; for the adventure and sometimes for research during my study in Human Geography. My master research was mainly focused on the Arctic region. I love fine arts, painting and working with my hands. I'm also really into martial arts. I practised Judo for ten years when I was younger. Now I mostly do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It's wonderful to meet new people; sharing interesting perspectives and stories. I love to cook for others and to throw theme parties. I like it when I can meet up with locals when I'm somewhere and I also enjoy to act as a local myself when people visit my hometown!
