I love visiting Groningen - I absolutely recommend renting a bike to get the actual local authentic experience. The city museum is just fantastic, food options are diverse and exciting, lots of nice bars and cofee places, especially in the city centre and close to Rijksuniversity. The park is also a must see, and coffeeshops are safe also for a solo travellers that wants to try!
Posted: July 23, 2024Experienced: July, 2024Groningen is an absolutely beautiful university city that is definitely worth visiting during a train trip to the north. Its stunning architecture and lively nightlife every day of the week, full of young people, are captivating. I felt very safe there.

I've lived in Groningen for about 4,5 years and never had a reason to feel truly unsafe. Of course, caution should be exercised when participating in the night life (always protect your drink!), but even going out can be done alone.
Posted: August 28, 2024Groningen is a safe, small city with many students. As there is a sparkling, young nightlife, there are often more people on the streets. However as with any city there are streets you should not walk alone at night (still chances are low something will happen).

So far so good! Still got a few days to spare, but I've seen some of the city and explored a bit on Mt own without any problems.
