In the morning and in the afternoon it’s safe, you have to take care of your belongings in the public transport and in the crowded areas tho. Try not to walk in dark or empty streets at night, and avoid the night bus
Posted: December 12, 2024Milan is currently not very safe. I recommend paying attention to the sniffers even during the day and keep the bags in front. Always have the emergency number at hand. Avoid going out alone in the evening in little frequented areas

Not too much safe. I bring the chili spray with me and I always keep the keys handy. Don’t stay at the station or place like this. Take care about your things and keep all close in your bag. The city is not safe but is beautiful to visit in the light of night
Posted: September 30, 2024In the morning it’s pretty safe overall and some areas are safe even at night but certain areas like via padova, corvetto etc you should avoid being out alone in at night. Overall petty theft is very common like stealing phones, bikes, bags etc

Milan isn't really safe these days especially for tourists. Be careful in duomo, touristy areas and metros as there are a lot of pickpockets. My apartment got robbed earlier this year, so be careful and always keep the keys slotted in
Posted: September 10, 2024Lately crimes have been more frequent and I don't feel it's a safe city anymore, these for sure some zones that are safer than others but I don't suggest to move alone at night. During the day its pretty okay to go around and still better avoid some not so good zones. I suggest staying in the center but still be VERY aware of your belongings people love to steal especially in crowded places and in the subway
Posted: September 8, 2024Milan is generally quite safe. I almost always feel safe when I walk alone, even at night, a part from one night around 3 when I felt sick in the bus because of air conditioning, and I decided to walk home passing through a street which is not so good. I received a lot of catcalling, and I felt deeply uncomfortable, but nothing happened more than that.
Posted: August 13, 2024Milan is a pretty safe city during the day and I would go everywhere alone in any area of the city, however I wouldn’t go out alone after dark especially in the center. There are also areas such as Milano Centrale where is good to pay attention to your belongings also during the day and in general keep an eye on your bag in all public transportation like in any big city. In Milan, I have experienced catcalling frequently and I got used to it at some point, and I was followed or approached by people as a teenager when I used to live there a couple of times, so don’t be nice or smile to men you don’t know.
Posted: July 23, 2024For (awful) cultural reason, harassment and cat calling can be more frequent than in other counties in Europe. The metro and the trams are safe, do NOT take the bus (90,91,92,93) at night after dinner. During the day, pay attention to your bags (there are lots of pickpockets in the public transportation and in the touristic areas. Porta Romana is a safe, cute zone with lot of nice bars. Also Argonne/Susa is becoming more and more popular (but in a safe way), if you want to stay close to the city center but spend a little less.

Milan is generally safe, but still a big European city. As a woman, I move around alone and feel very safe during the day. I do also come back home alone by bike or public transport at night and feel relatively safe (still always careful about what happens around me, make sure I'm not being followed etc.) You should always be careful, especially around the main train station (Stazione Centrale) and other more sketchy/peripheral areas, but in a "better be safe than sorry" mood. Don't leave your house door/car unlocked, watch out for pickpockets especially in the most touristy areas, don't leave your belongings on a bar table/chair if you care to see them again :)

*Safety: I didn't feel very safe at first, I've heard of some bad experiences from Milan and Italy in general too. The crime rates are rising. Being mugged, harassed or raped were my worries. When I arrived, I saw dirty streets and huge poster ads for alarming systems, so not the best time around. But then I walked a lot around the city and I must say, most of the time I didn't feel in danger. I started to recognize the city's vibe. I was very cautious and preventive too. Then I met other travelers and Milanese and they had a great time there! *What to do there: For sight-seeing I liked going on an eng walking tour through citywalkers with Marco. There's lots of history and fun details to learn about the city. You need to book a few days ahead. You pay as much as you wish (generally like 10 eur+). It's 3 hours long and after the tour Marco shows other places you can go to on your own. He loves the place and is a great tour guide. The Duomo visit is quite expensive and the queue was long even on Friday morning during a rainy day, so I chose to skip it. The castle is worth visiting. *Food: I recommend choosing the restaurants and cafes before leaving to eat. It's not easy to find a good place just searching around lol but there is some delicious food for sure! Just plan ahead. Look at the map. Ask people. *Money: A meal in a restaurant/bar costs circa 10 euro. Groceries aren't much cheaper. Public transport is I think around 2,2 euro for 90minutes *Transport: I liked walking. Exploring different places. There're also multiple metro lines, trans, buses I think. Currently there are some strikes around the public transport, but usually it works well. Taxis are expensive. Public transport is packed during the weekend. Duomo Square and streets with expensive stores seem to always be full. *Stay: I stayed at the Yellowsquare hostel. It's been great, they have many activities and guests. They host karaoke nights sometimes and those are popular among Milanese, especially millennials. I loved meeting people there.
