Safety in Rome depends greatly on the area of the city. However, you should always be vigilant and careful, especially if you are alone in the evening or at night. I don't consider it unsafe in general, but you still need to be careful.

Rome is a beautiful city to explore, but keep these things in mind (especially if you’re a girl): 1) Do NOT go to Termini after 8 p.m., especially on the Via Giolitti side. It’s known to be unsafe after dark. If you need to change buses at Termini, try to find an alternative route home. If that’s not possible, take a taxi. And if you have no other choice, make sure you’re in a group of at least 3–4 people. 2) Avoid the Vittorio Emanuele area at night ((same reasons as above)). 3) If you need to wait for a bus, places like Barberini or other spots near the city centre are much better options — they stay lively and well-populated even late at night. 4) If you have one, carry pepper spray. Stay safe girls 🫶🫶🫶

For me for some neighborhoods are super chaotic. I am a Turkish person who has lived in Istanbul and sometimes I feel Roma is less safer than Istanbul. Catcalling is a lot, especially pickpocket is a lot.

I have been living in Rome for two years and have never truly experienced dangerous situations, even going around alone at night. There is always someone around. I have always avoided too peripheral areas alone at night. Also Termini station is full of scary people so I would not go there at night.

Rome is a generally safe city, of course since its so big and mixed it really depends on the area you are in. In the touristic parts and central areas you really just have to worry about pickpockets, while in the southern parts especially some poorer neighbourhood, sexual harassment like catcalling or stalking can be more common.
