The blue mountains is one of the safest, if not the safest, places I have lived. The people are generally friendly and calm on the surface. However, there do tend to be more concerning behaviours towards Katoomba. But, there aren't enough of them to be worried. And, if you are hiking alone in the bush, in a non touristy area, I would just try to avoid coming across another lone person in general. I've always had good experiences with other lone hikers... Well I've had weird ones actually 😂 which is fine. But, just in case. People do at times go into the bush to do illegal stuff because there's nearly zero chance of getting caught.
