You can walk at night, you can take easily public transport without any problem. The only people who can be agressive are drink and drugs homeless people but they don't do anything. Many Australians leave their doors open and no one steals them.

For my lifestyle in Melbourne, the experience is safe in general. There will inevitably be people that act invariably but I feel safe, and if we meet up, I'll ensure we are comfortable and safe as can be at all times.

Overall Melbourne is a safe city. I have not been a victim of any crimes and would say the overall culture is secure, general common sense like keeping phones/wallets out of site in tourist areas and using apps like Uber would keep you safe.

Generally safe, but use general precautions especially at night and if drunk or alone. Don't walk through parklands in the city at night, the CBD is generally ok. Not a huge amount of street violence etc
Posted: April 4, 2025I would say Melbourne is generally pretty safe. As a girl if you go out at night I would say for your safety make sure someone is with you if you can especially in the city. But overall it’s pretty safe if you have common sense.
Posted: March 16, 2025In general is safe, but being a woman you have to be careful with drogued people and homeless people too. At night in general I feel safe, but I avoid areas where I know there're too many hobbos, like fitzroy.
Posted: February 27, 2025Melbourne is generally pretty safe, certain areas are worse than others. I don’t like walking alone at night to be on the safe side. Always travel with caution, and ideally not alone during the night. Other than that it’s a super welcoming and fun place to visit!
Posted: February 15, 2025No issues during the day. I do worry about walking anywhere at night with the actions of men, as there’s not always other people around. Sexual/verbal harassment is not uncommon from people under the influence. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself or ask for help (our public transport drivers are honest). Cars occasionally are targeted for breaking into, and the occasional home depending on what area you’re in.
Posted: February 8, 2025Melbourne is a beautiful city and people are really unbothered. I have never witnessed first hand crime yet (touchwood) but the news is quite scary. Even then, Melbourne has been very highly rated with regards to safety and overall livability!
Posted: February 6, 2025Melbourne is really safe for solo travellers. Like any big city, it pays to be mindful of your surroundings and there are some areas that are a bit sketchy after dark (southern end of the CBD near Southern Cross) but overall you shouldn’t have any major issues. Stick to well-lit, populated areas after dark. Every now and again you might get some unwanted male attention on public transport but if you’re vocal about it other passengers will help you. I feel safer on trams and buses at night as there’s a driver who can assist if needed. Watch your drinks in bars/clubs as drink spiking does happen sadly.

My Melbourne experience is not too good, however that is likely due to my experience at the hostel (St Kilda Nomads). At this hostel I was in a mixed room and a guy was jerking himself off the whole evening. He slept in the bunk below me and the whole bed was shaking. After that I didn’t feel so safe in the city anymore. Also I thought that st Kilda area was kind of sketchy. Not everything was bad though, there was a beautiful beach walk to a viewpoint. This is a must do at sunset!
Posted: October 28, 2024First time that i went to melbourne i wasn’t sure what to do. There seemed like a lot to do in such little time. from what i did end up doing i felt safe, especially as would go out at night by myself i didn’t question my safety
