Melbourne is generally pretty safe, certain areas are worse than others. I don’t like walking alone at night to be on the safe side. Always travel with caution, and ideally not alone during the night. Other than that it’s a super welcoming and fun place to visit!
Posted: February 15, 2025No issues during the day. I do worry about walking anywhere at night with the actions of men, as there’s not always other people around. Sexual/verbal harassment is not uncommon from people under the influence. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself or ask for help (our public transport drivers are honest). Cars occasionally are targeted for breaking into, and the occasional home depending on what area you’re in.
Posted: February 8, 2025Melbourne is a beautiful city and people are really unbothered. I have never witnessed first hand crime yet (touchwood) but the news is quite scary. Even then, Melbourne has been very highly rated with regards to safety and overall livability!
Posted: February 6, 2025Melbourne is really safe for solo travellers. Like any big city, it pays to be mindful of your surroundings and there are some areas that are a bit sketchy after dark (southern end of the CBD near Southern Cross) but overall you shouldn’t have any major issues. Stick to well-lit, populated areas after dark. Every now and again you might get some unwanted male attention on public transport but if you’re vocal about it other passengers will help you. I feel safer on trams and buses at night as there’s a driver who can assist if needed. Watch your drinks in bars/clubs as drink spiking does happen sadly.

I’ve been living in Melbourne for eight years, and feel safe in all neighbourhoods at all times of day or night. People are friendly and welcoming. Feel free to ask for help if you need it. Use normal levels of precaution.

Melbourne is one of the safest city I’ve ever lived in. It feel really safe to me as I keep going out till 3-4 am. I didn’t experienced any assault of any kind. I also live in the city, even if there’s some homeless people or drunk people, they don’t attack you. They are in their own world. The police here is very performant too.
Posted: January 24, 2025I live in Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs and I feel safe. I will say I don’t go out late late at night but into the evening there are always people around. I think melbourne has a good culture for that stuff. I should say this is my perspective as a tall white women with an athletic build
Posted: January 21, 2025Were I live is in a safe and accessible area. Like everywhere you have some interesting characters, but they just talk at you and move on, just startling but then you feel fine. Nothing to be stressed about.
Posted: January 16, 2025It’s a safe city. I can take the public transfer and never felt uncomfortable! The homeless people and those you are using drugs can be seen but they don‘t do anything. I never had an bad experience in CBD or somewhere else

CBD quite safe as it’s always bustling and well lit and there’s always people around. As usual like many other cities there are certain places that you expect sketchy people to hang out at night such as Elizabeth street but as long as you mind your own business it’s usually fine

My Melbourne experience is not too good, however that is likely due to my experience at the hostel (St Kilda Nomads). At this hostel I was in a mixed room and a guy was jerking himself off the whole evening. He slept in the bunk below me and the whole bed was shaking. After that I didn’t feel so safe in the city anymore. Also I thought that st Kilda area was kind of sketchy. Not everything was bad though, there was a beautiful beach walk to a viewpoint. This is a must do at sunset!
Posted: October 28, 2024First time that i went to melbourne i wasn’t sure what to do. There seemed like a lot to do in such little time. from what i did end up doing i felt safe, especially as would go out at night by myself i didn’t question my safety

A curious and passionate human exploring the big and the little things in life. I love being in nature. My favourite job has been farming veggies. I like to cook and preserve. I enjoy various crafting activities, but struggle with motivation. I love books and film. I enjoy playing board games. I love connecting with the people, nature, and city around me.
