Hobart is a generally safe place to be if you avoid dangerous areas like Glenorchy. There are more tourists around during the Summer months and the sun doesn’t set until 9-9:30pm so it’s light until very late, making it safer. Then during Winter months, there are 10x less tourists, meaning that there are less people around, and the sun sets at around 5pm, making it completely dark by 7pm. Regardless of seasons, I wouldn’t recommend being out after 11pm (there’s not much of a night life anyway). Public transport is great and most bus drivers are friendly, however I would again avoid any buses that go into areas like Glenorchy as they can get pretty rowdy and unpredictable quite quickly. DO NOT be careless with Tasmania’s wilderness and terrain. Yes, there are many easy, chilled, and utterly breathtaking walks, day trips, and hikes throughout the state which are 10/10 experiences and I would definitely recommend them to you if you’re coming to Tasmania, however the outdoor climate and terrain can get extremely dangerous for tourists who aren’t used to the environment, especially during Winter as temperatures can get to below 0 degrees C. Due to this, I would recommend knowing your skills and physical ability beforehand and taking them into consideration when deciding on which activities to go on. *The emergency services number in Australia is 000 if needed!

Unless you are going to particularly dodgy areas then there’s really nothing to worry about, Hobart is very safe compared to the rest of Australia. We get a fair share of delinquent youths and crackheads but it’s not at all anything to be scared of.
Posted: March 8, 2025it’s pretty safe and decent. at most couple of teenagers doing petty theft or whatever. i never really worry about any issues in every day. barely ever crosses my mind. lived here all my life. at most i barely hear any friends have issues either.

I think it's very safe. There is some crime that goes on but I think relative to other places it's very safe. I would be careful about silly drunk people late at night, and as the streets can be quite empty it's best to just get straight in an Uber where you can.

It’s safe to walk around the city without worrying about being robbed or harassed. It gets quiet at night as there’s not much night life in Hobart, but it’s generally safe to walk on the street alone, just always be aware of your surroundings.
Posted: June 13, 2024Felt safe loved the laid back atmosphere and the range of activities that were on offer. Travelled round the country too was amazing! Felt very safe. Budget wise easy to do as a backpacker just be aware no Aldi in the state.
