Is Berlin Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Berlin is generally safe for solo female travelers. Violent crime is rare, locals are usually welcoming, and physical harassment is low. Regardless, it's important to remain vigilant, especially after dark. There is a good police presence and public transportation is usually safe at all times. However, some neighborhoods are considered less safe than others. Like in any other city, use common sense and take standard precautions like staying in well-lit areas, not disclosing you're traveling alone to strangers, and being wary if you consume alcohol.

How safe is Berlin?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Berlin generally has a high safety level. However, like in any major city, certain precautions should be taken, especially at night. Central areas and neighborhoods are typically well policed and lit. Public transportation runs around the clock and taxis are readily available. Nevertheless, sticking to well-traveled areas is advisable. Some areas might be less frequented late at night and it's always important to stay aware of the surroundings. Walking alone is generally safe but caution should always be exercised.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Berlin is widely used by locals and tourists due to its efficiency and comprehensive network. You can conveniently travel all across the city without feeling unsafe, even into the early hours of the morning. However, like any other large city, pickpocketing can be an issue so stay vigilant about your belongings and be cautious of your surroundings. Overall, Berlin's public transport can be considered safe for solo female travelers.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Berlin, being a modern and liberal city, has relatively few issues of street harassment. Although incidences can occur, as they can anywhere, most of the areas that tourists frequent are safe and well patrolled. You may occasionally encounter some rude comments or unsolicited attention especially during the night. Still, residents are generally welcoming and respectful towards women. You can feel confident about navigating the city independently. Nonetheless, we advise using common sense and being aware of your surroundings in less crowded areas or later at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Berlin, as a global city, generally maintains a low rate of petty crimes. Although instances of theft and pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded areas and public transportation, they are not rampant. The locals are typically respectful and helpful to tourists. However, staying alert and aware of your surroundings is always recommended for any traveler.

Berlin was my favorite city to travel to. It was an educational trip, although I plan on going back to Berlin for a more local experience. Everything I visited was pure gold. The Art museum is stunning and Architecture in Berlin is just phenomenal. It's just like walking through a mix of modernity and history. It's a city that really speaks for itself. There isn't much nightlife at night during the week, so you always have to search for an open pub or a disco. I stayed 5 nights at "Meinigen Hotel" which is not only an hotel but also a hostel (I think there's more than one Meinigen Hotel but mine was just next to the Berlin Wall). The prices were average and sometimes we moved using the Metro. I recommend trying food specialties and exploring the historical side of the city with a guided tour or being accompanied by a local. Overall safety was just a 10/10 until 1am (i didn't really experience being outside in the late night hours) and I didn't even feel unsafe for a single moment in Berlin. The only weird things that really caught my eye's attention were people drinking early in the morning (like 8am) , a lot of beer and vodka bottles in the street and along the sidewalks and drunk people sleeping on benches in the morning or in the afternoon

I recommend the Kreuzberg area for nice food and night pubs. In general I noticed that prices have become more expensive, but this probably affects all Europe in general. I have been in different spots just for photographic purposes (architecture - ubahn stations etc).

I went to Berlin with my friends and visited clubs there. I also tried some really good food. The food is cheap if you're earning in euros, but otherwise, it can be expensive. The weather is the usual cold German weather. Overall I’d recommend everyone to visit Berlin.

Solo travel

Berlin is fun! Its up to what you travel preferences are. Of course if you are up for night life then its the best place. When it comes to food or just experincing the german culture, i would recommend other smaller cities! Its also not the safest place for female travellers, just the atmosphere in the city especially evening hours and in the city centre is just creep!

I would say since i travelled with a friend so i had the advantage of not being at a disadvantageous position with regards to safety as compared to a solo traveler. Like every big city there are certain areas that are safer than others. Some places around Alexanderplatz felt a little sketchy after dark but otherwise it was okay.

We went specifically for a concert with Berliner philharmonie and it was great! Absolutely amazing musicians! We stayed at a place called easyhotel and it was actually really nice! I recommend buying things from Aldi if you are with a tight budget! We also checked the zoo and did some sightseeing. It was nice but the public transport was a bit confusing… I didn’t feel safe being by my self in the evening but I didn’t actually feel threatened by anybody. You should visit!

I recommend you to visit different food spots for every meal every day. The food was amazing! There is a lot of different and international option. You don‘t have to visit the most popular and expensive ones with people lining up outside, even the small bakeries/cafes are very good!

I went to Berlin for 3 says with 2 friends and I felt very safe. We went to see christmas market and its beeeautiful! I recommend go on december because of that and try the hot wine (5€ just the drink, 10€ if u want to keep the CUP) pls. We paid 5€ to entry. The city is so clean, and quiet (too quite tho). You have a lot of things to see from holocausto and its heavy stuff. I tried a lot of different beers and the hot dog in german is unbeliaveable. 3 days its more than enough!

Depends on the time you're in Berlin. During Daytime I'd say it's pretty same. At night time I would avoid high crime areas. Overall I feel mostly safe in Berlin. I'm usally in Berlin during the day or the evening.

About Me

I just came back to live in my hometown (Padova, Italy) after many years abroad and I feel more like a foreigner here than I've ever been. I lived in Portugal, Denmark, Brazil and Uruguay, where I always met wonderful people who welcomed me like a local. I'd love to give back. I studied Pedagogy but my interests include anything creative, herbal medicine (witchcraft if you may), spirituality, outdoor adventures... I'm currently attending a Permaculture Design course to take steps towards my dream of putting my hands in the soil everyday, in a conscious, meditative manner. I've lived in an intentional community and would love to get back to community life very soon! I'm passionate about women's empowerment and the menstrual cycle.
