Solo travel experience

I’m currently travelling in Montreal, I’m here for a month. I’m having a lot of fun here, it’s really nice and safe place, as a woman I feel very good with the city and walking by myself. The only bad point would be the prices that are very high unfortunately…

I absolutely adore Montreal. I would recommend accommodation close to transit/train stations as their transit systems are really efficient. Things stay open late but on weekends expect them to wrap up around 3am. I wouldn’t recommend being out alone past that time. Even though it’s still fairly safe, there were still a few unsafe moments as a woman travelling alone. So stick to transit, don’t be out past 2-3am especially alone, and call an Uber if you must!

Group travel experience

Overall I thought my experience here was pretty good. I came with a mixed gender group of friends and we stayed at a airbnb for 4 nights. I think the average price for each person was just a bit over $100. The public transport is easy to understand even without understanding French, but our taxi/uber experiences were not very good. There’s many activities outside of the city that can be easily accessed by bus as well as a robust nightlife. Although the one day we went to a club, all the women in our group got groped by some sleezey old dudes (we’re all in university). Still, it was a really fun experience to have with friends!

Group travel experience

Montreal is a great place to visit! We went for a weekend last February and found lots of places to enjoy. I felt safe the whole time, would recommend the thrift stores and restaurants in China Town- specifically Chez Chilli.

Beautiful city with old world charm. Food scene is very good. Montreal also has a large musician and circus vibe. Lots of summer festivals. The old port and the Olympics Stadium and village is a must see.

I was in Montreal alone and felt very safe. Public transportation is easy to navigate, and in the summer there are always a lot of festivals happening throughout the city, there's plenty to do.

Montréal is a fairly safe city, as with all cities it is important to be aware of your surroundings and careful about where you go at night. Be aware of your belongings especially in high traffic tourist areas, just as a precaution. Public areas are safe and the public transportation is good. There are however often homeless individuals laying/sleeping certain stations on a regular basis.

About Me

Hello ! I’m 29 yo. I’m French. I recently left my country for living one of my dream, moving in Montreal. I love to live abroad for knowing new culture and meeting new people. I did it several times in Europe like in Moscow, Warsaw, Dublin and Brussels. It helps me to learn a lot about myself and others. I’m also a journalist, working in local radio. I’m very curious. And I’m always ready for discovering new addresses, exhibitions or just sharing a drink !

Local tips

Montreal is super safe for women, especially if you stay downtown. I never had issues going home alone after a night out (of you stay on main roads especially). Transportation : There’s metros every 10min approximately, lots of buses, also the city center is not huge and very walkable.

Montreal is an amazing place. I lived there for many years and know the city. Here are my recommendations. Place d’Armes is the city center, definitely a very nice area. Street sales take place on St Catherine in the summer, as well as festivals such as Jazz Fest. From my experience, Montreal is an exciting city because of its neighbourhoods. I recommend staying in an Airbnb near Plateau, Mile End, Villeray or St Henri. These neighbourhoods offer many artistic shops, cafes, walking routes, parks, and restaurants. There are many places to see. MAC, the Museum of Fine Arts, exhibitions at Marché Bonsecours, the historical and old part of the town. Mile End and Plateau often organise small artistic events. It's worth visiting Ville Marie tower for its panoramic view from the "enfants terribles" restaurant. Places to eat. Montreal is a fantastic city for foodies. Please try restaurants outside the city center. - Ma poule mouillée for their poutine or any other chicken dish (Plateau) - Arthur Nosh for their brunch (St Henri) - Damas - Syrian food in a very luxurious place (Outremont) - Deville diner - place with burgers, alcoholic milkshakes and delicious food (downtown) - Really good Iranian restaurants (Ville Marie metro station) - Il focolaio for pizza (downtown) - Taj Mahal for Indian food (downtown) - Fabergé for breakfast (Mile End) - Le serpent for fancy dishes and elegant decor (downtown) - Jean-Talon Market for lobsters, pastries or pancakes - El Rey del Taco (near Jean-Talon Market) - Pierogi in Chinatown - if you want to party, you can find places on Crescent, boul St Laurent, rue notre dame.

- Eat poutine, but not just any! Restaurants: Mache, Brouhaha, Pub le Trefle and many others offer really good poutine. In cheap bars you'll find a simple version with store-bought barbeque sauce, which is ok for a hangover. - Underground shopping center. You can find it around McGill metro station and it extends to several metro stations in the area. - Old Town, if you want to immerse yourself in the past. I recommend the Pointe a Calliere museum and the Maison Saint Gabriel museum, both in Old Port. - Marche fleuve montagne, it is about a walk between Old Port and Mount Royal with explicit posts about history and architecture along the way. - Speakeasy-style bars: very trendy. Hidden bars with a prohibition theme and amazing homemade cocktails. - Quartier des spectacles: catch a show at Place des Arts! Visit the contemporary art museum or the fine arts museum, which is not too far from there. - Quartier Latin is a nice neighborhood, on Saint Denis Street. Stroll through small streets to see typical Montreal architecture with spiral staircases and sharply ended windows. - Lafontaine Park: once a zoo, now a huge park in the middle of the city (the zoo moved to Granby). - Come to a show at the Wiggle room, it's really worth it. - Food tours are good. We have food from all over the world! Greek, Indian, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean. - Mount Royal, in Park des Castors (at the top) rent equipment (if it has ever snowed there) for winter sports right in the city!
