How safe is Montreal?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Montréal is generally a safe city to travel to, even for solo female travelers. The city center and tourist areas are well-lit and patrolled by police, making them safe to walk alone at night. Crime rates are relatively low compared to other major cities. It's always advised, though, to stay aware of your surroundings, particularly in more secluded or less populated areas. Public transportation, such as the metro and buses, are also available and safe at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Very safe

Montreal's public transportation, including buses and the metro system, is very safe even during late-night hours. It is reliable, clean, efficient, and widely used by locals. There is also a visible security presence. However, just like with any other large city, it is advised to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings to ensure personal safety.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Montreal is generally a safe and respectful city with occasional incidents of street harassment, which are not prevalent. You may encounter the odd unsolicited comment or attention, especially during the night-time in certain districts. However, with its strong multicultural community and considered one of the safest cities in North America, the rate of street harassment towards women is relatively low. This is complemented by the proactive approach of local law enforcement in maintaining public safety. It is still recommended to stay cautious and aware of your surroundings, particularly in isolated or less populated areas. As with any locale, there may be exceptions, but overall Montreal is conducive to solo female travel.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Montreal is generally a safe city with its low level of petty crimes such as theft and pickpocketing. However, it's always recommended to keep an eye on your belongings especially in crowded places and during festivals. Apply regular travel precautions like keeping your valuables secured, not leaving any belongings unattended, and avoiding poorly lit areas or isolated spots during night.

Solo travel

I’m currently travelling in Montreal, I’m here for a month. I’m having a lot of fun here, it’s really nice and safe place, as a woman I feel very good with the city and walking by myself. The only bad point would be the prices that are very high unfortunately…

I absolutely adore Montreal. I would recommend accommodation close to transit/train stations as their transit systems are really efficient. Things stay open late but on weekends expect them to wrap up around 3am. I wouldn’t recommend being out alone past that time. Even though it’s still fairly safe, there were still a few unsafe moments as a woman travelling alone. So stick to transit, don’t be out past 2-3am especially alone, and call an Uber if you must!

Group travel

Overall I thought my experience here was pretty good. I came with a mixed gender group of friends and we stayed at a airbnb for 4 nights. I think the average price for each person was just a bit over $100. The public transport is easy to understand even without understanding French, but our taxi/uber experiences were not very good. There’s many activities outside of the city that can be easily accessed by bus as well as a robust nightlife. Although the one day we went to a club, all the women in our group got groped by some sleezey old dudes (we’re all in university). Still, it was a really fun experience to have with friends!

Montreal is a great place to visit! We went for a weekend last February and found lots of places to enjoy. I felt safe the whole time, would recommend the thrift stores and restaurants in China Town- specifically Chez Chilli.

Beautiful city with old world charm. Food scene is very good. Montreal also has a large musician and circus vibe. Lots of summer festivals. The old port and the Olympics Stadium and village is a must see.

I was in Montreal alone and felt very safe. Public transportation is easy to navigate, and in the summer there are always a lot of festivals happening throughout the city, there's plenty to do.

Avoid suspicious looking people. There are issues with mental health and aggressive encounters do occasionally happen. Various neighborhoods are different. Downtown at night is usually fine (I have been followed though).

Montreal is generally a safe city! Platrau, Mile End and most parts of Villeray are easy to travel. Some spota downtown (especially downtown and close to the bus station) can be more stressful at night.

About Me

Hello ! I'm Solène, I'm French and I'm currently on a one-year temporary work visa on Montréal. Before returning to France permanently, I decided to treat myself to a 3 month road trip across Canada and United States. I can't spending 3 months alone, I believe that richness of a trip also comes from meeting people. I would also love to discover hidden places, beyond the tourist spots. Moreover, my english needs improvement, and I think there's no better way to improve it than by immersing myself directly in a country. FRENCH Salut !
