I was traveling with a group and still got approached by people with questionable intents, some beggars who were rude as well, so I wouldn’t say it’s entirely safe for solo traveling. Only in certain areas though, like alleys and I experienced it along Chinatown. During the day, much better, so many lively people. They still wanted to speak English so that was a relief. Did not get to interact much with the locals, unfortunately. I loved visiting Old Montreal, touristy but worth it. I had the...

I absolutely loved my trip to Montreal. I felt very safe and appreciated how organized and walkable the city was. The bike lanes were fantastic, making it easy to explore sustainably. Montreal’s diverse attractions, beautiful architecture, and environmentally conscious vibe really resonated with me. Plus, the variety of restaurants offered such a rich cultural experience. It’s truly a stunning and inspiring city. Total cost is approximately $1,000.

I’m currently travelling in Montreal, I’m here for a month. I’m having a lot of fun here, it’s really nice and safe place, as a woman I feel very good with the city and walking by myself. The only bad point would be the prices that are very high unfortunately…
Posted: March 26, 2024I absolutely adore Montreal. I would recommend accommodation close to transit/train stations as their transit systems are really efficient. Things stay open late but on weekends expect them to wrap up around 3am. I wouldn’t recommend being out alone past that time. Even though it’s still fairly safe, there were still a few unsafe moments as a woman travelling alone. So stick to transit, don’t be out past 2-3am especially alone, and call an Uber if you must!

Safety in Montreal varies a lot depending on neighborhood. Plateau Mont Royal, Villeray, Mile End, feel very safe compared to my references (London, Marseille, Reunion, Paris), but some neighborhoods can feel very rough. The city centre around Berri-Uqam for example, can make you feel very uneasy with drug use and homelessness, although I’ve never witnessed violence myself there, but I wouldn’t feel safe there if I visited for the first time.
Posted: May 25, 2026Montreal is generally safe, but it all depends on the neighborhood you go to at night, like Maisonneuve, Saint-Michel, Ontario, Montreal North. Just be careful. The best places to go, I would say, are downtown (Saint-Catherine), Westmount, Chinatown.

Montréal IS one of the safest place I have ever lived as a young woman :) In France I couldn’t really go out at night without feeling scared, and now I can come back at 3 am in the morning without a care in the world :))

It's safe pretty much all the time during the day. As long as you don’t go near the north of Montreal like Aujou you will be fine. At night, you need to be careful like any other country. The worst threath is generally robberies.

I’m a Graphic designer based in Montréal. I’m originally from Réunion island, and i’ve also lived in Marseille and London. I’m both calm and sociable, and easy to adapt to people and contexts. I love visiting exhibitions, but also enjoying ordinary life in the neighborhoods i visit.
