How safe is Toronto?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Toronto generally boasts a high level of safety, even at night. Many parts of the city are well populated and well lit, making them feel secure for a solo female traveler. Use common sense as you would in any city, and stick to populous areas. Public transportation is reliable, which greatly contributes to safety. However, like any city, there can be unpredictable situations so always maintain awareness of your surroundings.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Toronto is generally safe and reliable. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) offers extensive service with buses, streetcars, and subways. However, like any big city, it can get crowded during peak hours and it's always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and belongings. They also offer a 'Request Stop' program for solo female travelers at night where you can request the bus driver to stop anywhere along the route between regular stops for added safety.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Toronto is typically a safe and respectful city where most individuals are not likely to experience severe street harassment. It carries a reputation of being a culturally tolerant and diverse city where respect is generally given to all, including solo female travelers. Nonetheless, like any other city, it isn't without occasional instances of unsolicited remarks or attitudes. However, these instances tend to be rare and isolated, with the city's broad safety measures and responsive authorities keeping such issues in check.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Toronto, being a large, bustling city, does have a certain level of petty crime such as pickpocketing or bag snatching, especially in crowded areas and on public transportation. But it is generally considered a safe place, especially compared to other major cities worldwide. As always, it's important to stay vigilant, keep your belongings secure and know your surroundings. Yet overall, common sense and basic precautions should suffice to keep you safe.

Toronto has improved tremendously over the last years! The food scene and club scene have both expended with nice, trendy and upscale spots to rediscover. As for safety, there is an homeless situation going on downtown, so I would just avoid that area after dark. Otherwise? Completely safe. As for budget, there is something for every price point - you just gotta research a bit of everything online and be willing to explore according to what you’re looking for. Great city for a quick weekend reset, with a good balance of things to do. The aquarium is a must.

Hotels and airbnb can be quite expensive. Groceries aren’t cheap either but going out to eat is reasonably priced. Lots of homeless people!! They seem to mostly mind their own business but it felt pretty unsafe. Some parks are completely taken over by homeless camps. They also can come up to you to ask for money or food. Sometimes I buy them something, adding more to the travel costs. Avoid routes coming past homeless shelters to avoid seeing them. Little Italy is a nice place to stay. Kensington Market is cute to visit for cafes, thrift shopping and music.

Toronto is chaotic. I did use the GO system that took me into Union station. From there you get shoved and pushed around, no one to ask for directions or how to connect to a train or bus. Decided to take Lyft for a bite to eat near where I was visiting - the driver was very nice and there was many food options

Toronto is the perfect city for travelling. I recommend stay near Harbour bay, there’re lots of Airbnb style hotel with good price. The food on Dundas street is incredible, and I really really like Hot hot rice noodle - the Crispy Pork rice noodle is amazing. Speaking of food, you can’t miss traditional Canadian food called poutine! And also I love Ice Wine sooooo much! Toronto is also a safe city, although you need be careful when you travel at late night in downtown. Otherwise it’s fine. I like Casa Roma, worthy of one-day visiting. CN tower is nice to visit, although I didn’t go to the very top of it (I remember it has different price for different level). I like Harbour bay too.

Very safe city. Though I find the best tome to travel to Toronto is during summer bc winter can be a bit harsh. The food is generally great and you can find restaurants that focus on different cultures!

I feel really safe here in Toronto. People are nice. I've been staying here since Sept '23, and I'll be leaving in a month, but I think for girls, it's a good place to visit! The only bummer is the cost—everything's so expensive, especially for me coming from Italy, where I was used to way cheaper prices. Still recommend coming, though!

Love how the city is so diversed and so much fun things to do all year long. I would recommend going to the beach off from the queens way. Little china is an amazing place to check out to if you like buying little things from your travels. The night life there is amazing almost anywhere you go there will be happy faces to welcome you.

I have lived in Toronto for over 3 and a half years now and it is the perfect city to live in! It is so vibrant, friendly and multicultural. I have never visited a city where I feel more safe in. It is a foodie heaven and so cultural, with so many things to do. The perfect place to be.

Toronto is safe for the most part. It really depends where you are within the city and within neighbouring cities. Overall during the day you should be relatively safe. Just try to know where you’re going and be aware of your surroundings. At nicgut, I would not recommend being by yourself when you’re Downtown. In the suburbs, it is generally ok (again it depends what part of the city you are in) but just have a eye out. Crime has increased within the last few years so it’s important to know where you’re going to get a sense of the safety level in that area.

If you’re being mindful of the sketchy areas and stay in the “safer” areas you should be okay but the homelessness and drug use has made the city more dangerous. I’ve personally been attacked on my way to class. Best advice is to just avoid the areas near drug sites or areas that are more rural/lower income neighbourhoods.

About Me

I'm a French girl who has lived in Toronto on and off for 6 years and with all the politics and economy issue ( cannot find a FT job) I sadly might have to leave the country for good ( heartbroken to say the least). I have worked in the arts for a long time and as an executive assistant. I love film, music, animals, the arts. I'm super easy to get along with and in these tough times I'd take any kindness I can get 💕. Until I figure what's next, I thought I would cross off my list a dream of mine to drive and visit New England and east Quebec.
