Very safe city for women but, as like any other big city, be careful in bars and night walking (lonely places). Also, check nowadays the public transportation website, in case you feel unsafe and want to report an incident.
Posted: March 27, 2025It’s really safe for women!! Just avoid certain neighborhoods during the night but except that if you remain where the crowd is there is not major risks, Montreal is an active city and there are always people outside no matter what time of the day it is
Posted: March 19, 2025It depends on neighborhoods/streets, but generally safe. If you are on the plateau/mile end, where there’s a lot of nightlife, I’d say it’s very safe, and life is still bustling late in the night so walking home at 1 or 2 am doesn’t feel that sketchy; there’s still loads of young people out and about. Between 3 and 5 is when I’d be more careful, as most clubs close at 3, so the only people out are those who stayed until closing, so there are fewer but drunker people out. Richer neighborhoods such as Outremont, Westmount, should also be very safe. Rosemont is safe, mostly young families/people settling down. Hochelaga used to have a bad reputation, but it’s getting gentrified so honestly not that bad anymore. Downtown and the Village can be a little dicier, again depending on which streets — avoid walking alone on st Catherine during the night, that’s where there’s sketchier people, druggies, etc. (Although there’s some nice gay clubs, and I’ve definitely walked on st Catherine and been fine; but it depends on level of comfort/confidence, and how long you have to walk on it. It’s a long street and some parts are better/worse than others. Walk on parallel street if you can) Downtown itself, generally fine, again st Catherine can be a bit dodgy, and square Cabot usually has a lot of homeless drunks so can feel a bit sketchier. Vieux port is generally safe. The metro is usually decently busy pretty late between the stops where there is night life so it doesn’t feel unsafe; if you are going to stations a bit at the edges of the line, you night be alone or with very few people on it; never had a problem. In general, I’ve felt pretty safe and haven’t had a bad experience in Montreal, even walking or biking alone at night to get home. That being said, look like you know where you’re going. Montreal nord is known as being sketchier, but it’s probably not where you’d want to visit anyways.

It feels really safe overall! Some areas are a little sketchy, but nothing too bad! Just avoid the berri-uqam area at night. Everywhere else is fine to walk alone at night, just take usual precautions!

Montréal is safe, but like every cities there’s always a danger of being a woman alone at nigth. I never been scare in the streets, but it is better to walk home with another person. I take regulary the subway and the bus with no problem
Posted: March 11, 2025Extremely safe for women, during the day as well ad night in most of Montreal Island. Public transport is very safe and there are night buses that will try their best to accomodate your route. The homeless people stay in the metros during winter but they are not aggressive at all and will leave you alone.
Posted: March 3, 2025It's a chill City but you still have to pay attention in the evening depending on which part of the city you are in. If you take the bus after 7 pm, you can ask the bus driver to leave you close to your location
Posted: February 28, 2025Honestly Montreal is pretty safe. There’s a few neighborhoods that are experiencing increased crime rates post Covid, but those are not usually the areas that would be visited by tourists so I’m not sure that it applies.
Posted: February 13, 2025The best city to go a safe trip! You can work at any hour of any day or night! Strangers are always here to help if something happens , and they are also kind! People really respect you and care for everyone well being
Posted: February 3, 2025Montreal is considered safe because the culture really promotes respect and tolerance. Like any big city people are from everywhere and the mix is really fun. And of course with the fun comes with big events and sometimes things can happen in bigger crowds. And also some neighborhood are targeted sometimes for violence (gang or else). As a woman I can go out whenever I want and dress however but I never push it personally.

I absolutely loved my trip to Montreal. I felt very safe and appreciated how organized and walkable the city was. The bike lanes were fantastic, making it easy to explore sustainably. Montreal’s diverse attractions, beautiful architecture, and environmentally conscious vibe really resonated with me. Plus, the variety of restaurants offered such a rich cultural experience. It’s truly a stunning and inspiring city. Total cost is approximately $1,000.

I’m currently travelling in Montreal, I’m here for a month. I’m having a lot of fun here, it’s really nice and safe place, as a woman I feel very good with the city and walking by myself. The only bad point would be the prices that are very high unfortunately…

I'm a 18 years old music student who lives in Montreal and desperately wants to travel and explore the world. My parents are French and I was born in Paris but I moved to Montréal 15 years ago (even though I stayed in the French system). My mother is also Tunisian which means I also grew up surrounded by that culture.
