Montreal is a very safe city (one of the safest in the world). Of course that you always need to be careful and not put you in trouble for any reason, especially when you don't know no one in the city/province/country. But overall, I never experienced a bad situation in Montréal 🙌.
Posted: September 17, 2025I think Montreal is fairly safe if you take reasonable precautions. You do see homeless people and some who appear to be mentally ill downtown and in the metro stations. However, these people generally leave you alone if you are minding your own business.

Many public spaces (parks, libraries, sports facilities, campus) are safe to walk around and chillax. In case of danger it’s easy to run out to public places, it’s not far, about 2-3 min of running and you’ll find yourself in an open area with lots of people. But still, it varies from neighbourhood, time and context. Most shopping centres are convenient and are safe to walk around. Coffee shops and restaurants are also safes to dines with friends.
Posted: September 2, 2025Montreal is a living city and if you stay in the big zones of life, it is very safe. There is some metros stations that are less safe, like Beaudry because there is a lot of drugs and people who might follow you to ask you for money. But overall, the city is generally very safe and as a young woman, I don’t feel uncomfortable walking alone in the centre ville. But I mostly get some comments from men that are not pleasant but they never went more far than this. I would still recommend staying with friends or people when it is getting late, and don’t forget that the metros close past a certain hour and then the buses are more rare.
Posted: August 24, 2025Very safe city in general. There’s some areas where you should be a bit more careful but I’ve never felt really unsafe here. If you’re near Berri-UQUAM metro station watch your bag and your belongings but compared to other big cities you should be alright even if you have your phone in your hands.

I was traveling with a group and still got approached by people with questionable intents, some beggars who were rude as well, so I wouldn’t say it’s entirely safe for solo traveling. Only in certain areas though, like alleys and I experienced it along Chinatown. During the day, much better, so many lively people. They still wanted to speak English so that was a relief. Did not get to interact much with the locals, unfortunately. I loved visiting Old Montreal, touristy but worth it. I had the best noodles with the biggest bowl ever, I forgot the name but definitely check that out. Poutine was bomb. Worth to visit if you are visiting Canada and are not too far away from Montreal.
