Is Vancouver Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Vancouver is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. It's a city with a low crime rate and locals are friendly and helpful. Nonetheless, like traveling anywhere, it's important to maintain awareness of your surroundings, especially when out late at night or in less crowded places. Streets are well-lit and public transportation, including trains, buses, and taxis, is widely available and reliable. As always, employing basic safety precautions such as not displaying expensive belongings, being aware of personal possessions, and keeping to populated areas in the evenings is recommended. The city is well-policed and emergencies are responded to swiftly. Don't hesitate to ask locals for help, they are typically more than willing to assist or provide directions.

Vancouver is great for anyone, from casual walks along the beach to live music. I recently went to a concert and had so much fun. The transit is great, and friendly people. Although it’s expensive, I recommend Granville island

Family travel

Vancouver is a great city to eat authentic Chinese food. It may be even more Chinese food than what they have in Hong Kong. The city has a good public transportation system that can access to more nature sites. Only thing is, some streets around Chinatown is very sketchy.

Favorite parts: Taking a sea plane to Victoria Whale watching Hiking up Grouse Mountain Oysters Short trip up to Whistler for an overnight stay & hiking (summer) Kayaking from Granville Island Tequila bar next to hostel (Samesun on Granville Street) I felt super safe the whole time. I avoided the areas that were recommended at that time due to high homeless population/drugs. I did have one homeless woman nicely ask me for money and I actually didn’t have any CAD and then she flipped and...

I loved my time there expensive but beautiful I especially love jericho beach, if you pay close attention when you’re close to the pounds in Jericho park, you can always spot beavers ! There’s also usually a heron and a large amount of ducks and geese hanging out as well

Crime index

Downtown Vancouver is usually very safe and has very limited crime. Any scarier/less safe areas are confined pretty much entirely to East Hastings Street. In daytime it’s not AS bad, but do not ever go there at night.

Vancouver is a mostly safe city, though like with major cities around the world there are some areas that are best to avoid -especially at night. The downtown eastside (especially the area surrounding the Main & Hastings St intersection) is the “Skidrow” area of Vancouver.

Vancouver is very safe. But we have big homeless problem. Avoid East vancouver. Other than that Vancouver is overall safe city for solo travelers . In Geneal Surrey, some part of downtown i am not comfortable walking at night

Usually pretty safe. There is a concentrated area of homelessness, mental illness, and drug addiction called the DTES (downtown east side) that can feel unsafe and very shocking to tourists. Chinatown is adjacent and suffers the same issues. It is recommended to stay off Hastings street east of Main Street. People will usually leave you alone but you will witness open drug use and people passed out or in distress on the sidewalks. Watch the ground for used needles in these areas. Stay aware of...

About me

Hi fellow travellers! I’m an easygoing introvert living in one of the most beautiful cities in the country. I love to travel, laugh, eat good food, and learn about people from all over the world. I work from home as a freelance administrator and clothing tailor, and have many hobbies: sewing, cooking, gardening, watching movies (I love horror and world cinema), playing video games, dancing, crafting, hula hooping, reading/writing, DIY… the full ADHD experience. I live with my husband of 15 years and our little pug in a housing co-operative. I am currently learning Romanian with plans to visit in May 2027.
