Overall, Ottawa is a great city to see historical buildings, experience Canadian traditions and nature and beautiful views. Lots of great museums to experience and unique government and parliament buildings you won’t find in other Canadian cities. At night, the downtown area is best walked with a friend or in a group, some people living on the street will take shelter in the byword market or close to Rideau Centre. Just walk smart during the day or night, being aware of your surroundings.

One of the safest cities in Canada, if not the world. If you are sensitive to drug users and homeless people, you might feel uncomfortable in some areas, but they generally keep to themselves - if you don't interact with them, they won't interact with you. Ottawa has brutal winters and insufficent warming centres, so anyone living on the streets could probably use some kindness. Don't be stupid, and do spare whatever change you have to the panhandlers.

It’s usually pretty safe, walking alone at night is still okay I’ve always done it. There’s a lot of homeless around Rideau but as long as you don’t engage or look like you know where you’re going they won’t bother you. Usually they just ask for food.
