Is Kolkata Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Kolkata generally boasts a safety environment for solo female travelers. The locals are quite friendly and willing to help, while violent crime is relatively low. However, it's important to remain cautious as tourists can be targeted for minor scams and petty theft. Additionally, some areas can be crowded which may make some individuals uncomfortable. Always use registered, reputable transportation and keep valuable belongings secured. Overall, just like in any city, extra precautions should be taken after dark.

Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Kolkata is generally safer than many other Indian cities, however, as a solo female traveler it is always better to be cautious. Night time can be relatively safe in well-lit and bustling areas but it can feel less secure in desolate or poorly lit regions. It's recommended that you avoid secluded areas during late hours. Always adhere to personal safety measures, such as avoiding interaction with strangers at night, keeping your belongings close, and using trusted and safe modes of transport. Leverage local advice whenever necessary.

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transport options in Kolkata are prevalent. They include buses, the metro, trams, and rickshaws. While it is generally safe during the day, caution is advised during the night. It's also important to note that they can be crowded and overwhelming, especially during peak hours, which can naturally create vulnerability. While instances of theft and harassment aren't uncommon, many citizens are courteous and willing to help tourists navigate.

Street harassment:Moderate

Kolkata is generally considered to be one of the safer cities in India for women. Like most large cities, it does experience some problems with street harassment, but it's not as endemic or aggressive as it can be in other regions. The cultural atmosphere is more respectful towards women, as influenced by the city's educated, intellectual population. However, it's also essential to be cautious, especially during the night. Always trust your instincts and do not be afraid to seek help or draw attention if you feel uncomfortable.

Petty crimes:Low

Kolkata, being a huge metropolis, does have instances of petty crimes like pickpocketing, bag snatching, and scams. However, compared to many other cities in India, the rate is significantly lower. It's important to be vigilant, especially in crowded areas like markets and stations. As a solo female traveler, always keep your belongings secure and avoid isolated areas, particularly at night.

Tap water:Unsafe

In Kolkata, tap water is typically not recommended for drinking, especially for travelers from foreign countries. The water quality varies, often contains different bacteria and potentially harmful pollutants. Therefore, it's more advised to opt for bottled water, which is widely available and affordable, or use a travel friendly water purifier. Consuming tap water directly may lead to health issues like stomach ailments.

Group travel experience

Things to do: I volunteered at Mother Teresa House while I was there. Incredible experience. Food: The street food was amazing. So good and cheap. I never got sick from it. Some sit down street places have real dishes. Ask for paper plates. Safety: I felt safe but was never out past 8pm by myself. When we went on bus to volunteer was with groups locals were so helpful telling us our stop was next. They are used to volunteers there. Uber very unreliable. Would accept your request but not show up if short trip ie small fare. Dress apprpropruate or you may get attention you don't want. Accommodation: Affordable places to stay on Suder street. Busy area with many places to eat and little shops. I stayed at Baptist Missionary Society guesthouse. Very cheap private and shared rooms. Meals served onsite. Gated with security to let guests in.

Is Kolkata worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

Kolkata was definitely the worst place I have been in my life. Accommodation is much more expensive if you want to find something fairly decent, and I had trouble finding good places to eat compared to the rest of India.

Solo travel experience

I went to Kolkata for 3 days and had a great time. The traffic and noise were crazy. The city has many wonderful sights and flavors to experience. Besides regular tourist spots such as the Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, etc, I loved visiting the potter's colony called Kumartuli and the Jorasanko Thakurbari museum. The food in Kolkata was a real pleasure.
