Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Pune is relatively safe for female solo travelers, even at night. However, like many other big cities, it has its own set of challenges. It's always recommended to stay in well-lit areas and avoid isolated spots or quiet streets. Public transport and taxis are easily available and reliable. However, it's always better to return back to your accommodation before late night, unless you're in a group. Ensure to follow basic safety measures like keeping your valuables safe and sharing your location with friends or family.

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Pune such as local buses and auto rickshaws are generally safe and reliable. However, they might be crowded during peak hours which can lead to a somewhat uncomfortable journey. The drivers usually respect the passengers. Taxis and app-based services like Ola and Uber should be preferred, especially during late hours, as they provide safer and more convenient transportation options for solo female travelers.

Street harassment:Low

Pune, being one of the progressive cities of India, tends to be safer for females with a relatively low level of street harassment. However, like any other city, it's prudent to take precautions such as avoiding isolated places late at night, dressing conservatively, and being aware of local customs and behaviors.

Petty crimes:Low

Pune is relatively safer than many other cities in India when it comes to petty crimes. Incidences such as pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and minor fraud are not uncommon, but they are not rampant either; particularly, if you stay alert and follow basic safety precautions. Like any other city, it is recommended to avoid deserted areas at night and keep your belongings close at all times.

Tap water:Unsafe

While Pune is one of the advanced cities in India with improvements in water quality and filtration, it is recommended for solo female travelers not to drink tap water. The local residents may be accustomed to the water, but as a traveler, one can be susceptible to potential waterborne diseases. Always opt for filtered or bottled water for safety.

Is Pune safe to travel?

Family travel experience

We were invited to a wedding, it was really exciting. The people are great! There are a lot of stray dogs, which made me feel a bit unsafe. If you are not outside in the night alone it’s totally fine. There is great nature to check out. One time we went to a place where they farm strawberries. The food there was so delicious and with fresh strawberries. One has to get used to the way they live (sleeping on the floor, peeing into a hole on the ground) but it’s all part of the experience and that’s what makes it so rememberable and exciting. I recommend renting a car.

Pune in my experience is one of safest cities to travel in India. Unlike Mumbai it's not buzzing in night but it has its own magic in solitude of night. I have travelled solo at 2 and 3 at night and I never felt unsafe (Given you don't count ghosts xD) Just kidding. It's pretty safe in my opinion.
