Is New Delhi Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

New Delhi, as a major city in India, can have some safety issues, especially for solo female travelers. Instances of harassment and mugging have been reported. It is advisable to avoid walking alone at night, dress modestly, and be vigilant in crowded areas. Local transport often gets overcrowded, so private or women-only options are recommended. However, don't be discouraged, because safety can largely depend on one's behavior and precautions. How safe is New Delhi?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

New Delhi, can pose safety challenges, particularly at night, for a solo female traveler. Although there are safe and well-policed areas, some places may be risky at night due to instances of crime. It's advised to avoid walking alone after dark, use trusted transportation, and be cautious of your surroundings. It's important to respect local customs as well. Sticking to crowded and well-lit areas or travelling with a group can increase the safety significantly. As with any city, it's about choosing the right place to walk around and knowing the safe parts.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in New Delhi is diverse with a substantial network of metro, buses, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws and taxis. The Delhi Metro is a very reliable, efficient, and safe way to travel around the city even late at night. However, buses and other forms of transportation can be crowded and may make some women uncomfortable, especially in non-peak hours or less busy routes. It's essential to stay vigilant, particularly in late-night hours. Stick to the women's compartment or sections when they are available.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:High

In New Delhi, it is not uncommon for women, both local and foreign, to experience street harassment. From unwarranted attentions such as staring and leering to more confrontational incidents of eve-teasing and groping. However, it tends to be less severe in touristy and crowded areas during daytime. Your experience might be different as street harassment levels can differ depending on a variety of factors such as the exact location, time of day, and personal demeanor. For safety, it's advisable to adopt local dress codes, avoid late-night journeys alone, and always be aware of your surroundings.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

Petty crimes such as pick-pocketing, bag-snatching, and small scale scams are commonplace, particularly in crowded areas such as markets and railway stations. Always keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings to steer clear of such incidents. While the local authorities are working continuously to curtail such crimes, it's always wise for travelers to be vigilant.

Its safe but not that much if you trust any stranger. Be smart while travelling and save all the helpline numbers. The best place for exploring food options. Lots of heritage and cultural attractions. Easy to commute. Easily find a good company anywhere. Great connectivity from other nstional and international destinations.

Solo travel

There are lots of delicious foods and numerous places to hang out. However, if you're a woman traveling alone, I wouldn't recommend it. It isn't safe... It would be better to go with a group or with someone close to you. Agra is one of the best places.

Solo travel

I visited Delhi alone and decided to stay in the Connaught Place, recommended by my Indian colleagues. It turned out that the neighborhood was safe and comfortable during my stay. During the day, I explored the city on my own and visited many tourist attractions. In addition, I went on a one-day trip to Agra to admire the beauty of Taj Mahal.

Solo travel

Delhi has many places to see - the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and Lotus Temple, to name just a few. The quickest way to move from place to place is by metro, taxis take forever unless you are going somewhere nearby. It's good to stay anywhere in central Delhi. I don't recommend hotels under 4 stars. I know the cost might be a bit higher, but it guarantees clean, mosquito-free, and noise-free accommodation.

Walk around and always carry a pepper spray. Always carry cash in case you're travelling via Auto rickshaw. Do not go out alone to dark places with no street light or go only with known group of friends

About Me

I like every form of travelling but prefer being near nature with less crowd around. I am all in for long walks to nowhere, looking at the night sky for hours and exploring with locals. I am here on this platform to connect with like-minded women and explore in a different (better) way.
