Is Udaipur Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Udaipur, fondly known as the 'City of Lakes', is known for its hospitality and rich cultural heritage. Women are generally safe in this city and people are quite helpful here. However, like any other tourist locations, keep a vigilant eye on your belongings and avoid isolated or overly crowded places during the late hours. It is fairly well lit in most tourist points, and the local police are often very helpful. As a tip, dressing modestly could ward off unwanted attention. While it's a safe city, it is always important to heed to the general travel advisory and precautions for overall safety.

How safe is Udaipur?

Safety at night:Moderate

Udaipur, also known as the 'City of Lakes', is relatively safe for female travelers. During the day, security in public places, hotels, and tourist attractions is adequate and tourists usually enjoy their visit without any mishaps. However, at night, it's always advisable to practice caution. Although the city centre and popular tourist sites are generally well-lit and patrolled, some alleyways, lesser-known regions, and outskirts can be poorly lit and isolated. While crime rates are not particularly high, instances of scams, pickpocketing, and occasional eve-teasing can occur. However, treating unknown people with respect, avoiding revealing attire, not carrying too much cash or valuables, and avoiding alone strolls post dark, especially in secluded areas, can help enjoy a safe, memorable trip.

Public transportation:Safe

In Udaipur, the public transportation such as buses and auto-rickshaws are generally safe to use. They are often crowded but the locals are helpful. However, while traveling it's important to maintain vigilance, avoid isolated areas, and stay cautious at night. Prepaid taxis from official counters are recommended for late night journeys. Always carry your belongings close to avoid any pickpocketing. Overall, with common sense and caution, it should be a comfortable experience.

Street harassment:Low

Udaipur, known as one of the safest and most welcoming cities in India, exhibits a low degree of street harassment. The locals are generally polite, respectful, and helpful, with an increasing trend towards gender equality. However, keep in mind that India still grapples with gender inequality issues, so it's always imperative to remain aware and alert, but do not anticipate anything more than occasional and harmless comments.

Petty crimes:Low

Udaipur, known as the 'City of Lakes', is one of the safer cities in India with a relatively lower rate of petty crimes. Theft and pickpocketing can occur, as with any tourist place, but it is not alarmingly common. Vigilance and basic precautions like not flaunting valuable possessions and keeping belongings secure will generally keep you safe.

Tap water:Unsafe

Travelers are generally advised against consuming tap water in Udaipur. The water may not be properly sanitized and could potentially contain bacteria, pathogens or harsh chemicals that could lead to stomach issues or other health problems. While some locals may be accustomed to it, it's prudent for visitors to opt for bottled mineral water, boiled water or treated water from verified sources for drinking and brushed teeth.

Is Udaipur safe for women?

Udaipur is a relatively safe city. People mostly are very hospitable and helpful but as it goes, we can’t really ever be too carefree, so I recommend always to be alert of your surroundings, especially if you’re travelling solo.

Is Udaipur worth visiting?

Couple travel experience

I had visited Udaipur in August 22 with my husband. The weather was quite pleasant. It was raining at times though. We had rented a bike. It's a beautiful city. You will be in complete awe after seeing its vast lakes and magnificent palaces. The people are quite friendly and helpful. I had a good experience overall.
