Is Acapulco Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Acapulco has been facing significant safety issues with increasing crime rates, particularly related to drug trafficking. While tourist areas are somewhat safer, the risk of unpredictable violence makes it a challenging destination for solo female travelers. It's recommended to stay alert, avoid non-tourist areas, especially at night, and stay informed about current situations.

How safe is Acapulco?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Walking alone at night in Acapulco can present safety challenges. It is recommended to take caution as street crime can occur. This could be even more challenging if you do not have a thorough understanding and good command of the local language. Stick to well-lit areas, avoid side streets and always remain vigilant of your surroundings. Also, consider opting for a taxi or a trusted ride-share service for night-time travel.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Unsafe

Public transportation in Acapulco, particularly the local buses, can be somewhat risky due to occasional instances of crime and the buses often being in poor condition. It is advisable to be vigilant at all times, avoid traveling during night hours and use taxis or Uber from reputable companies when possible. Additionally, knowing some basic Spanish could also be extremely helpful.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

Acapulco, as one of Mexico's tourist hubs, shows a moderate level of street harassment. While many of the locals are friendly and welcoming, solo female travelers have reported incidents of undesired attention and comments, particularly in crowded areas and during late-night hours. Ensure to keep vigilant at all times and avoid secluded areas especially during night to minimize exposure to such situations.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

In Acapulco, petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching are quite common, especially in crowded areas and on public transport. It's important to always keep an eye on your belongings and avoid flashing expensive items in public. Also, be cautious when using ATMs, prefer those located in malls or banks. While most people have a safe visit, caution can make all the difference.

Is Acapulco worth visiting?

Solo travel

I traveled alone in January of this year and spent a week experiencing some of the best vacations of my life. I rented a room through Airbnb and arrived at an extraordinary place with a pool and an amazing host. Each day, I visited a different place on the tours offered on the beach. I went to La Quebrada and got there just in time to see the sunset. I ate in beachside restaurants. I had a great fun and felt safe.

Is Acapulco safe for women?

It depends widely in what area you're in tho but Acapulco is known for being one of the unsafest cities of Mexico for a reason. I'm already living here for 4 months tho and I never had any problems. So I think if you do some research you'll be fine. Locals say, the further up the mountains you go, the more dangerous it gets. Along the Avenida costera Miguel alemán you should be fine due to the heavy military presence there. Locals are extremely kind and friendly
