The city is well-serviced by local buses and taxis, and the drivers are typically respectful and professional. However, it's always wise to stay alert and keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded places. As an additional caution, it's recommended to use only official taxis and avoid unofficial ones for added security. Despite these minor safety considerations, countless solo female travelers use public transport in San Miguel de Allende without incident.

Nonetheless, like anywhere, it is always best to stay cautious and observant, especially in crowded areas or at night.

Solo travel experience

A very charming and beautiful town in Central Mexico that you may want to consider a stop in. I felt very safe there. And a lot of the American ex-pats I met said the same but they did caution me not to travel at night. They mentioned a few airport shuttles etc. being stopped and passengers being held up.

Solo travel experience

I stayed for one and a half days and then decided to leave. Felt safe and never had any issues. It's a gorgeous, small city, great for taking pictures but quite pricey and very touristy.

Solo travel experience

San Miguel was one of my favorite places in Mexico. I did not find it more expensive than Oaxaca, or CDMX. The market in San Miguel was one of my favorites.

Solo travel experience

San Miguel de Allende is way overhyped. There are many pueblos mágicos in Mexico with even grander churches, better food, culture, and artesanías. I don’t think it’s that amazing compared to other places I’ve been in Mexico. I was highly disappointed when I went to San Miguel after all the reviews and publicity. It’s beautiful but not any more beautiful than other pueblos. The city of Guanajuato in my opinion has so much more to offer and is way more impressive in terms of architecture, history, and gastronomy.
