How safe is Puerto Escondido?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Puerto Escondido generally holds a tranquil beach atmosphere. However, like any city, it does contain risk, especially at night. Make sure to keep valuables concealed and avoid less crowded areas. Always secure your accommodations. Despite these risks, locals are typically friendly and helpful. Safety can considerably increase when staying within well-traveled areas, avoiding late night walks alone, and utilizing safe and known taxi services when needed.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Puerto Escondido mainly consists of taxis and colectivos (shared vans). Generally, they are reliable and used frequently by both locals and tourists. However, it is important to negotiate rates before getting in a taxi, as they do not use meters. For colectivos, you should be aware of shared space with strangers. Keep your belongings close to you and avoid displaying expensive items. Always remain aware of your surroundings and travel during daylight hours if possible for additional safety.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Puerto Escondido, the overall atmosphere is quite relaxed and charming. While you can expect glaring and occasional catcalling, it's typically less intense compared to other larger cities. The locals are usually friendly and respectful, primarily due to the fact that it is a tourist town. However, like in any destination, it's always recommended to exercise caution, particularly when out and about at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

In Puerto Escondido, you need to stay cautious as petty crimes like pickpocketing and bag snatching do occur occasionally. Strive to keep your belongings secure and avoid flashing expensive items or carrying large amounts of cash. Despite this, the area is generally friendly and is popular among tourists so it's not considered highly dangerous. Always stay alert, aware of your surroundings and follow local advice.

I really liked Puerto Escondido, these are the beaches that I would recommend: Playa Coral: beach accessible via hotel 50 pesos (with drink) or 100 pesos (buffet + drink). Very pleasant, with few people but lots of waves. There's also access to the hotel swimming pools. Playa Bacocho: beach next to Playa Coral, accessible via the rocks. Not much shade, but a beautiful beach with fewer waves. Difficult to find the exit, as some beach clubs won't let you out. Playa Angelito / Manzanillo: angled beaches, but we went there on a public holiday, so it was impossible to get in because it was so crowded. I think it could be nice on weekday mornings. Quiet beach and clear water Playa Carrizalillo: We went here because the Angelito / Manzanillo beaches were too crowded. Small beach with more shade, perfect for swimming. Stairs with lots of steps to get there. Playa Punta Zicatela: best place to stay, powerful waves. Very cool for watching the sunset and playing volleyball.

Couple travel

It's super peaceful, very nice for solo or couple travel, and a great escape from the stress of the city. It's a very safe, calm, and beautiful place where you can surf, spend time by the sea, and watch sunsets. You can also easily travel to nearby villages by bus, and they are very affordable.

Solo travel

I was just in Puerto Escondido in February and I felt very safe there. I found it to be a really nice seaside town with friendly people. It is a big spot on the map for surfers, so there is a bit of a hippie vibe and there are plenty of tourists.
